The San Antonio Winery is a special place in Los Angeles, California. It is a winery, which means it makes wine from grapes. This winery has been open since 1917. You can find it in the Lincoln Heights area, just east of downtown.
At the winery, there is a shop where you can buy wine. There is also a restaurant and a big hall for parties and events. The winery gets its grapes from farms owned by the Riboli family in Monterey and Napa Valley. They also buy grapes from other growers in California.
Besides bottling wine at the original place, San Antonio Winery has a modern winemaking building in Paso Robles. They even opened a tasting room there in 2016. For a long time, San Antonio Winery was the only winery operating inside Los Angeles city limits. This was true even after a time called Prohibition.
The Winery's Story
In 1917, a man named Santo Cambianica came to Los Angeles from Italy. He started the San Antonio Winery right where it is today. He named it after Saint Anthony (San Antonio in Italian) hoping for good luck.
A few years later, in 1920, a law called Prohibition started in the United States. This law made it illegal to make or sell alcohol. But Santo Cambianica found a way to keep his winery open. He asked the Catholic Church for permission to make wine for religious ceremonies, like communion.
The winery also sold grapes to people who wanted to make their own wine at home. Because of its long history and unique story, the San Antonio Winery is now a special historical landmark in Los Angeles. It is known as historical monument #42.
