San Augustine is a city in East Texas, United States. It is the main city of San Augustine County, Texas. In 2020, about 1,920 people lived there.

History of San Augustine
The first European settlement in this area started in 1717. Spanish missionaries built a mission called Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de los Ais. This mission was later abandoned and then rebuilt in 1721. It stayed active until 1773. Today, you can visit its preserved site at Mission Dolores State Historic Site.
The town of San Augustine officially began in 1832. It was built on land owned by Thomas S. McFarland. The town got its name from an old Spanish fort, the Presidio de San Agustín de Ahumada. This fort was named after Don Agustín de Ahumada y Villalón. He was a very important leader in New Spain from 1755 to 1761.
Geography and Climate
San Augustine is located in East Texas. It covers an area of about 4.8 square miles (12.4 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
