A Look Back: San Clemente del Tuyú's Story
The area around San Clemente del Tuyú was first seen by Ferdinand Magellan in 1520. He named the nearby Cape San Antonio. Later, in 1580, Spanish explorers checked out the land.
Early Names and Explorers
A governor named Hernando Arias de Saavedra and his Guaraní team called the spot Rincón del Tuyú, which means "muddy corner." In 1744, a British Jesuit named Thomas Falkner mapped the area. A Spanish Jesuit, José Cardiel, later named a nearby stream San Clemente.
From Ranches to Resorts
The land by the water was bought by the Ortiz de Rozas family, who owned a lot of land in Argentina. In 1816, it was sold to another important family, the Leloirs, and became a sheep farm.
In 1825, General Juan Manuel de Rosas, a descendant of the Ortiz de Rozas family, made the area part of the Buenos Aires Province. This was its first official area since Argentina became independent in 1816.
After 1852, the area grew. A county seat was set up in Mar del Tuyú in 1864. With the growth of meatpacking, the government built docks for fishermen, a canal to Buenos Aires, a train line, and two lighthouses between 1878 and 1902.
Growing into a Tourist Spot
In the 1920s, San Clemente del Tuyú became popular. Mayor Jorge Gibson helped turn the coast into public beaches. This project was a big success!
In 1932, the first gravel road was built into San Clemente. The town officially became a municipality. Soon, there were gas stations, campgrounds, new homes, a power plant, and even a monastery.
President Juan Perón planned a submarine base nearby. Even though it was never built, it led to a four-lane highway into San Clemente. This helped the town grow quickly after 1950. A hospital was built in 1970, and Mundo Marino, a large ocean park, opened in 1979. It's still one of the biggest oceanariums in South America!
New Attractions and Discoveries
A nature park called Parque Bahía Aventura opened in 1997. It wasn't very popular at first. But in 2003, something amazing happened: mineral hot springs were found there!
County Mayor Juan de Jesús set aside part of Bahía Aventura. He opened Termas Marinas, which is now one of Argentina's most popular hot springs.
There's also a place called Tapera of Lòpez. In 1922, Manuel López and Magdalena Luero lived there. Manuel was a fisherman and salted fish. They had 12 children in that spot!
San Clemente del Tuyú Today
San Clemente del Tuyú is the most northern of seven seaside towns in the La Costa district. Today, it has 27 hotels, with 14 of them being three or four-star places.
Besides the ocean park, adventure park, and hot springs, you can also visit two natural science museums. You can take fishing boat tours and walk on the 129-meter (400-foot) long pier.
Punta Rasa, at the northern end of the city, became a nature preserve in 1997. Fishing boat tours are popular, especially around the annual black corvine fish festival held every December since 1966. The huge sand dunes are also used for an annual Enduro competition each February since 1998.
San Clemente del Tuyú has a sister city, San Clemente, California, in the United States. Visitors from there come to San Clemente del Tuyú every year since 1969.
During the busy summer months (January and February), nearly a million people visit the seven sister communities. San Clemente del Tuyú hosts about one-tenth of these visitors. Many summer visitors also come to hear sermons and talks by Benedictine monk Mamerto Menapace. These happen at the order's San Clemente farm, which offers simple places to stay for "pilgrims."
In September 2009, San Clemente del Tuyú hosted a big meeting called the Sixth Iberoamerican Congress on Environmental Education.
