San Diego Country Estates, often called the Estates, is a community located in a beautiful valley. It's like a resort with different neighborhoods. This area is connected to the nearby town of Ramona, California. The Estates are a special type of place called a census-designated place. This means it's a community that the government counts for population, but it's not officially a city.

The Estates are in the northern part of the San Diego metropolitan area. It's just east of Poway and southeast of Ramona. It's about 38 miles (61 km) northeast of the big city of San Diego. In 2010, about 10,109 people lived here. This was more than the 9,262 people counted in 2000.

History of the Estates

Early Days

Long ago, before the Estates were built, the area was home to the northern Ipai people. They were a group of the Kumeyaay people. These groups moved around the region, living in temporary settlements in the San Vicente Valley. You can still find grinding stones in large rocks near creeks. These stones show that the Ipai people used to grind acorns to make bread.

In the 1700s, a priest named Father Mariner from Mission San Diego de Alcalá explored this valley. He thought it was beautiful and named it after Saint Vincent. Later, the land became part of a Mexican land grant in 1846. This grant was called Rancho Cañada de San Vicente y Mesa del Padre Barona. Important people like William Augustus Barnett and families like the Dukes settled here.

In 1970, a famous builder named Raymond A. Watt bought 3,250 acres in the valley. He wanted to build a new community, which became San Diego Country Estates.

Recent History

On May 13, 1973, San Diego Country Estates hosted a famous tennis match. It was between 55-year-old Bobby Riggs and 30-year-old Margaret Court. The game happened at the San Vicente Country Club. Riggs won the match.

The area is also known for its history with Southern California wildfires. Two big fires, the Witch Fire and the Cedar Fire, started near the Estates.

  • The Cedar Fire began on October 23, 2003. It started about 3 miles east of the Estates in Cleveland National Forest.
  • The Witch Fire started on October 21, 2007. This fire was part of many fires that hit Southern California that month. The Witch Fire caused thousands of people in the Estates area to leave their homes. Roads leading out of the Estates became very crowded. People worried the fire would spread towards them. Luckily, the wind changed direction. The Witch Fire became the second-largest fire in California history. It burned over 197,990 acres and led to the largest evacuation in California history. About 1,000,000 people in the San Diego area had to leave their homes.
