San Estanislao de Kostka is a city and district in the San Pedro area of Paraguay. People often call it San Estanislao or, more commonly, Santaní.

History of Santaní

San Estanislao was started on November 13, 1749. A Jesuit priest named Sebastián de Yegros from Asunción founded it. He named the town after Saint Stanislaus Kostka. The main goal was to help the local Indian people learn about Christianity.

The city's name comes from Stanisław Kostka, a Polish priest. He was made a saint by Pope Benedict XIII on November 13, 1726. This was 23 years before San Estanislao was founded.

The name Santaní is a shorter way to say San Estanislao. It combines "san" (Spanish for saint) and "taní" (the Guaraní word for Estanislao). People from Santaní are called "santanianos".

In 1869, during the Paraguayan War, San Estanislao became the temporary capital. Marshall Francisco Solano López led the government from here. He stayed in the city from August 23 to 31. His army passed through after battles elsewhere.

New People Come to San Estanislao

Around 1880, many new people moved to San Estanislao. Some came from other parts of Paraguay. Others came from Europe, especially from Germany and Italy. You can still see the influence of Italian families today. Many old buildings have Italian styles. Some of the oldest families in Santaní have Italian last names.

Later, around 1920, people from Lebanon also came to Santaní. They first arrived in Itacurubí del Rosario. Then, some traveled to Santaní. Other countries that sent many new residents included France, Portugal, Brazil, and Spain.

Climate

San Estanislao has a warm climate. It is called a humid subtropical climate. This means it has hot summers and warm winters. It is also very close to a tropical monsoon climate. This type of climate has a wet season and a dry season.

Economy

After the war in 1870, Santaní and the nearby areas relied on farming and cutting down trees. Tobacco was the most important crop. Growing and packaging tobacco provided many jobs for people.

Today, farming is still the main way people make money. Farmers grow cotton, mandioca (cassava), soy, and sesame. Raising cows for beef and milk is also important. Other jobs include forestry, shops, and services like doctors, banks, and construction.

Education

San Estanislao has many schools. They range from elementary schools to universities. Both public and private schools are available.

In 1994, a College of Economic Sciences opened in the city. It is part of the National University of Asunción. There are now more than 10 universities in downtown Santaní.

Transportation

It is much faster to travel between San Estanislao and Asunción now. Asunción is about 151 kilometers away. Travel time got shorter when Route 3 opened in May 2004. Buses leave the city's terminal for Asunción every 30 minutes.
