The San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (San Francisco Bay NERR) is a special protected area. It is one of 27 similar reserves across the United States. These reserves are part of a bigger system called the National Estuarine Research Reserve System. The San Francisco Bay NERR helps us learn more about the San Francisco Bay's wetlands and estuary areas. It also teaches people about them and helps protect them for the future.

What is the San Francisco Bay NERR?

The San Francisco Bay NERR is like a team effort! Many different groups work together to manage and protect this important area. These groups include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), San Francisco State University, and California State Parks. Other partners are the Solano Land Trust and the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission.

Where are the Reserve Sites Located?

The San Francisco Bay NERR is made up of two main locations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Each site is unique and helps protect different parts of the bay's ecosystem.

Rush Ranch Open Space Preserve

This site is a large area of about 2,070 acres (about 8.3 square kilometers). It is found on the northern edge of the Suisun Marsh. This marsh is a very important wetland area. Rush Ranch is located near the Potrero Hills in Solano County.

China Camp State Park

This park covers about 1,640 acres (about 6.6 square kilometers). It is right on the shore of San Pablo Bay. This area is close to the city of San Rafael in Marin County. China Camp State Park offers great views and important habitats.
