History of San Martín
Early Inhabitants and European Arrival
The first people to live in the San Martín area were the Huarpe Milkayak. Their land was led by a tribal chief named Pallamay. In 1563, the first Europeans arrived. They were led by Captain Pedro Moyano Cornejo.
Changing Names and Official Founding
The city was first known as Rodeo de Moyano. It was also called La Reducción, which means "The Reduction" in Spanish. In 1816, its name changed to Villa Los Barriales. This happened when it became part of the Corocorto Priesthood of Mendoza Province. The Governor of Mendoza, Toribio de Luzuriaga, officially founded the city at this time.
San Martín's Role in Independence
San Martín became very important during the Argentine War of Independence. This was a war for Argentina to become free. José de San Martín, a famous Argentine general, received a large piece of land here. He used this land to grow crops and help the Chilean army. This army, led by Bernardo O'Higgins, worked to stop new Spanish invasions from Chile into Argentina.
In 1823, Governor Pedro Molina changed the city's name again. He named it San Martín to honor General José de San Martín. The general was not only a hero but also brought new ideas to local farming and viticulture (grape growing).
Growth and Development
In 1885, the first railway line reached San Martín. This connected Buenos Aires with Mendoza and Chile. Many Italian immigrants came to the area from Buenos Aires because of this.
Later, in the 1950s and 1960s, National Route 7 was built. This highway runs between Buenos Aires and Mendoza Province. San Martín became a key place for distributing goods. It is located on the most important highway connecting Buenos Aires and Santiago, Chile.
