San Pedro de la Paz is a city and commune in Chile. It is located in the Concepción Province, which is part of the Biobío Region. In 2002, about 80,447 people lived there.
The city's main road, Pedro Aguirre Cerda avenue, was finished in 2005. Many people who live in San Pedro de la Paz travel to Concepción every day. They cross the Biobío River by car, bus, or train. San Pedro de la Paz is considered part of the larger Greater Concepción area.

History of San Pedro de la Paz
San Pedro de la Paz was first built during the Conquest of Chile. It began as a fort called la Candelaria. This fort was destroyed in 1599 after Governor Martín García Óñez de Loyola died.
The fort was rebuilt in 1603 by Alonso de Ribera. It was named San Pedro de la Paz and became part of an area called La Frontera. A small town grew around the fort.
During the Chilean War of Independence, the town was burned in 1821. This happened during the Battle of San Pedro. The fort was later ruined by a big earthquake in 1835.
Population and Area
According to a 2002 census, San Pedro de la Paz covers an area of 112.5 square kilometers. At that time, it had 80,447 people living there. This included 38,571 men and 41,876 women.
Most of the people, about 80,159 (99.6%), lived in urban areas. Only 288 people (0.4%) lived in rural areas. The population of San Pedro de la Paz grew by 18.6% between 1992 and 2002.
How San Pedro de la Paz is Governed
San Pedro de la Paz is a commune, which is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. The council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people every four years.
From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Audito Retamal Lazo. He was an Independent politician.
San Pedro de la Paz is part of a larger area for elections. It is represented in the Chamber of Deputies by two people. These representatives also cover Concepción and Chiguayante. The commune also has two representatives in the Senate.
