San Vicente del Valle is a small town and a municipality in Spain. It is located in the province of Burgos, which is part of the Castile and León region. This area is known as the comarca of Sierra de la Demanda. Besides San Vicente del Valle itself, the municipality also includes another small village called Espinosa del Monte. It has been part of the municipality since 1857.
Location and Landscape
San Vicente del Valle is nestled in a valley. This valley is where the Tirón River begins its journey. The town is situated south of the Montes de Ayago mountains and north of the Sierra de la Demanda mountain range. This location gives it a beautiful natural setting.
A Glimpse into History
People have lived in the area around San Vicente del Valle for a very long time. The oldest signs of human life found here date back to the Middle Paleolithic period. This was a time when early humans used stone tools.
The Romans also left their mark on this region. Evidence of Roman roads, including paving stones and mileposts, has been discovered. However, many Roman structures were later destroyed. This happened during the Visigoth invasion and their early rule.
The first written mention of San Vicente del Valle appeared in the year 945. It was found in records from the San Millan de la Cogolla monastery. The record referred to it as viam that vadit ad Vicentium. This Latin phrase means "the road that goes to Vicentium."
Population Changes Over Time
San Vicente del Valle's population has changed a lot through history. The highest number of people living in the municipality was 476 in 1876.
From the 1930s to the 1960s, the population stayed around 240 people. However, during the 1970s and 1980s, the number of inhabitants decreased. It reached a low of only 30 people living in 13 homes in 1991.
In the decade after 2001, the population varied. It was 34 in 2001 and went up to 52 in 2004. The 2007 census recorded 45 inhabitants. More recently, in 2014, the municipality had 31 inhabitants.
