History of Sand Canyon
Sand Canyon was not always part of the city of Santa Clarita. It used to be an "unincorporated community," meaning it was not officially part of any city.
When Sand Canyon Joined the City
On December 25, 1987, Sand Canyon officially became part of Santa Clarita. Over the next few years, more pieces of land nearby were also added. This happened between 1989 and 1992 for areas to the northeast. Later, in 2012 and 2013, the westernmost and southernmost parts of Sand Canyon also joined the city.
The Sand Fire of 2016
In 2016, a large wildfire called the Sand Fire happened in the canyon. Wildfires can be very dangerous and cause a lot of damage to homes and nature.
Geography of Sand Canyon
Sand Canyon is nestled in the foothills of the northwestern San Gabriel Mountains. This area is also part of the upper Santa Clara River watershed, which means water from this area flows into the Santa Clara River. You can find Sand Canyon within the Canyon Country borough of Santa Clarita.
Life in the Sand Canyon Community
Sand Canyon is a special place, especially for people who love horses. It's known as an "equestrian community."
Horse Riding and Homes
Being an equestrian community means there are many trails for horseback riding. The homes here are often very large and fancy, making them some of the most expensive in the Santa Clarita Valley. Many of these houses are "custom-built," which means they were designed and built specifically for their owners.
Local Spots and Ranches
The community also has the Sand Canyon Country Club, a place where people can enjoy sports and social activities. There are also several famous ranch properties in the area. These include Macmillan Ranch, Rancho Deluxe, Robinson Ranch, and Sable Ranch.
