Sand Rock is a small town located in the state of Alabama, in the United States. It is found in two different counties: Cherokee and DeKalb. The town officially became a town in 1988. In 2020, about 591 people lived there.

A Look Back: Sand Rock's History
The area known as Sand Rock first had a post office in 1855. This post office helped people send and receive mail until 1903. A popular story about how the town got its name says that a pioneer once sat on a large rock that was on sandy ground. This simple act supposedly led to the name "Sand Rock."

Sand Rock is located in the western part of Cherokee County. Its exact location is 34°13'57.115" North and 85°46'13.516" West. The town sits on top of a large landform called Lookout Mountain. A small part of Sand Rock reaches north into DeKalb County. To the south, Sand Rock shares a border with the town of Leesburg.
The U.S. Census Bureau states that Sand Rock covers a total area of about 11.3 square kilometers (or 5.07 square miles). All of this area is land; there are no large bodies of water within the town limits.

According to the census from the year 2000, there were 509 people living in Sand Rock. These people lived in 195 households, and 154 of these were families. The town had about 112.4 people per square mile. There were 215 homes, with about 47.5 homes per square mile. Most of the people living in Sand Rock (99.41%) were White.

Learning in Sand Rock: Education
The first school in Sand Rock was a simple one-room log cabin. Around 1895, the school moved to a more central spot and was built with two rooms. In 1916, another room was added to fit more students. A new school building was built in 1922. This building had five rooms, including a small library. Over time, the school grew and added more grades. Sand Rock School had its first group of students graduate in 1932.
Today, Sand Rock School is part of the Cherokee County (Alabama) School District. This district includes several other schools like Cedar Bluff School and Cherokee County High School. Sand Rock School teaches students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. It has about 819 students and 54 teachers.
