A Look Back: Leesburg's History
Leesburg wasn't always called Leesburg! It was first known as Hamptonville. This name honored Joseph Hampton and the Henslee family.
A post office opened in Hamptonville in 1836. A few years later, in 1839, the town's name officially changed to Leesburg.

Leesburg is in the western part of Cherokee County. It's located at 34°10'57.446" North and 85°46'8.350" West.
To the north, you'll find Lookout Mountain and the town of Sand Rock. To the south, there's Weiss Lake, which is part of the Coosa River. The dam that creates Weiss Lake is just south of Leesburg.
Roads and Travel
U.S. Route 411 goes through Leesburg from west to east. This road leads southeast about 5 miles (8 km) to Centre. Centre is the main town in Cherokee County. If you go southwest on US-411, it's about 19 miles (31 km) to Gadsden.
Alabama State Route 68 also meets US-411 in Leesburg. Route 68 goes north about 5 miles (8 km) to Sand Rock. It also follows US-411 east towards Centre.

The U.S. Census Bureau says Leesburg covers a total area of about 6.4 square miles (16.7 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.02 square miles (0.05 square kilometers), is water.
