Sandeep Lamichhane (Nepali: सन्दीप लामिछाने; born 2 August 2000) is a famous cricketer from Nepal. He is a right-arm leg spin bowler and has served as the captain of the Nepal national cricket team.

Lamichhane is known for playing in Twenty20 (T20) leagues all over the world. He has played for teams like the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Hobart Hurricanes in Australia's Big Bash League (BBL). He holds the record for taking the most wickets for Nepal in both ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

He made his T20I debut in a special way. He played for a World XI team against the West Indies. This made him the first cricketer ever to play his first T20I match for a combined team. In August 2018, he was part of the team that played in Nepal's first-ever ODI match against the Netherlands.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Sandeep Lamichhane was born in the Syangja district of Nepal. He later moved to the Chitwan district, where he began his cricket training at the Chitwan Cricket Academy. The academy was run by Raju Khadka, a former captain of Nepal's cricket team.

One day, Nepal's captain Paras Khadka and coach Pubudu Dassanayake visited the academy. They asked Lamichhane to bowl, and they were very impressed. At just 14 years old, his talent was clear, and he was chosen for the national under-19 training camp.

Besides cricket, Lamichhane is also a singer. He has a YouTube channel where he shares his songs and music videos.

Under-19 World Cup Success

Lamichhane's career took off when he was selected for Nepal's under-19 squad for the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. In a match against Ireland's under-19 team, he achieved a hat-trick, which means he took three wickets on three consecutive balls. He was named man of the match for his amazing bowling performance of 5 wickets for 27 runs.

He was one of the best bowlers in the tournament, finishing with 14 wickets. His talent caught the eye of people around the world, including former Australian captain Michael Clarke. Clarke invited him to play for a club in Sydney, Australia.

Lamichhane's skill as a leg-spin bowler made him a popular choice for many T20 franchise teams. These teams are part of exciting, fast-paced cricket leagues held in different countries.

Indian Premier League (IPL)

In 2018, Lamichhane made history when he was bought by the Delhi Capitals (then called Delhi Daredevils) in the IPL auction. He became the first-ever Nepalese cricketer to get a contract in the IPL, one of the biggest T20 leagues in the world.

He made his IPL debut in May 2018 against Royal Challengers Bangalore and took a wicket in his first match. Playing in the IPL was a huge learning experience for him and helped him grow as a player.

Other Major Leagues

After his IPL success, Lamichhane was in high demand. He has played in many other top T20 leagues, including:

  • Caribbean Premier League (CPL): He was the first Nepalese player to be selected for the CPL, playing for teams like the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Jamaica Tallawahs.
  • Big Bash League (BBL): He became the first Nepalese cricketer to play in Australia's BBL when he signed with the Melbourne Stars. He later played for the Hobart Hurricanes.
  • Pakistan Super League (PSL): He played for the Lahore Qalandars in the PSL.
  • Global T20 Canada: He played for the Montreal Tigers and later the Toronto Nationals in this Canadian league.

His journey through these leagues allowed him to play with and against some of the best cricketers in the world, which he said "changed his life."

International Career for Nepal

Lamichhane has been a key player for the Nepal national cricket team. He helped Nepal achieve many important milestones in international cricket.

In 2018, he played a huge role in the 2018 ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament. In one match against Kenya, he took his first five-wicket haul in a List A game, with figures of 5 wickets for 20 runs. He was named the Player of the Tournament for taking 17 wickets in six matches.

His performance helped Nepal qualify for the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier. This was a big step for the country, as it led to them gaining One Day International (ODI) status for the first time.

In December 2021, Lamichhane was named the new captain of the Nepal national team. In April 2023, he set a world record by becoming the fastest bowler to take 100 wickets in ODI cricket, achieving this in just 42 matches.
