The Nepal men's national cricket team represents Nepal in international cricket matches. The team is managed by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). Nepal is an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 1996. This means they are not a "Test status" team, which is the highest level in cricket.

Nepal gained Twenty20 International (T20I) status in 2014. They also earned One Day International (ODI) status in 2018. As of June 2025, Nepal is ranked 17th in ODI cricket and 18th in T20I cricket.

The team has played 77 ODI matches, winning 38 and losing 36. They have appeared in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup twice, in 2014 and 2024. They also played in the Asia Cup in 2023 and the Asian Games multiple times.

History of Cricket in Nepal

Early Days of Cricket

Cricket in Nepal started a long time ago. An old book from 1877 mentioned that young men were encouraged to play cricket. However, at first, some people thought these games were not important. Over time, cricket became popular, especially among the ruling Rana family and other important people.

In 1946, the Cricket Association of Nepal was created to help cricket grow. After Nepal became a democracy in 1951, cricket started to spread to more people. The Cricket Association of Nepal joined the National Sports Council in 1961 to promote the sport across the country.

Joining the ICC

In the 1980s, it became easier to travel and communicate in Nepal. This helped cricket spread beyond the capital city, Kathmandu. Nepal became an Affiliate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1988. In the early 1990s, a big plan was started to develop cricket. This led to new tournaments and more cricket in schools.

People in Nepal quickly became very interested in cricket. So many wanted to play that there weren't enough facilities. Nepal became an Associate Member of the ICC on February 2, 1996. That same year, the national team played its first match in the 1996 ACC Trophy in Kuala Lumpur.

By 1998, Nepal had better cricket facilities. They even hosted the ACC Trophy that year in Lalitpur, Kirtipur, and Kathmandu. Nepal has one of the biggest fan bases among ICC Associate Members. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) was suspended by the ICC in 2016 due to government interference. But it was brought back in October 2019.

21st Century Cricket

Early 2000s Success

Nepal's focus on developing young players started to pay off in 2000. The Nepal national under-19 cricket team finished eighth in the Under-19 World Cup. Later that year, the senior team reached the semi-finals of the 2000 ACC Trophy. In 2001, Nepal played in the ICC Trophy for the first time.

In 2002, Nepal finished second in the 2002 ACC Trophy. In 2003, they hosted and easily won the ACC Emerging Nations Tournament. Raju Khadka made history by scoring Nepal's first international century, hitting 105 runs against Bhutan.

Nepal played first-class cricket for the first time in 2004 in the ICC Intercontinental Cup. They beat Malaysia. Nepal also finished third in the 2004 ACC Fast Track Countries Tournament. This helped them qualify for other important tournaments.

In 2006, Nepal played Namibia in a play-off match. Later that year, they toured Pakistan. In the 2006 ACC Trophy, Nepal bowled out Myanmar for just 10 runs, which is the lowest score in men's international cricket. Nepal won the ACC Premier League in 2006.

In 2008, Mehboob Alam made a world record by taking all ten wickets in a match against Mozambique. This earned him a spot in the Guinness World Records. Nepal finished third in the 2008 ICC World Cricket League Division Five.
