Discovering Sands Key's Past
Sands Key has had many different names over time. Long ago, people called it "Las Tetas," which is a Spanish phrase. It was also known as "The Paps," "Pownal Kay," "Pownall Island," "Restinga de Las Tetas," and "Saunder's Key."
Why the Name "Las Tetas"?
The name "Las Tetas" likely came from two hills on the island. These hills might have been natural formations or even ancient mounds built by Native Americans. People from The Bahamas often called the island "Saunder's Key."
