Sannox Through Time
Sannox has a long and interesting history. You can find clues about its past all around the area.
Ancient Life in North Glen Sannox
In a place called North Glen Sannox, you can see signs of very old settlements.
- There are remains of an Iron Age fort. This was a strong place built by people living thousands of years ago.
- You can also find what's left of an old village. This village was left empty in 1829. This happened during a time known as the Highland clearances. Many people had to leave their homes in Scotland during this period.
- Most people from this village moved far away to Canada. They even built a church there that looked like the one in Sannox. Today, only the cemetery remains in Canada.
- You can still see the outlines of old houses and "runrigs." Runrigs were a special way of farming common in Scotland a long time ago.
Mining in Glen Sannox
For a while, mining was an important job in Sannox.
- A mine opened in Glen Sannox in 1840. It operated for about 20 years.
- In 1862, the mine was closed. Some people thought it was making the beautiful local area look bad.
- However, the mine reopened after the First World War. A special railway and a pier (a kind of dock) were built. These helped transport a mineral called barytes that was dug from the mine.
- The barytes ran out in 1938, and the mine closed for good.
- The railway and pier were taken away in the 1940s. But if you look closely on Sannox beach, you can still see parts of the old pier.
Village Jetty and Cemetery
- A small boat yard used to work at the village jetty. This is where boats would be built or repaired.
- The cemetery in Glen Sannox once had a small chapel. It is the resting place of Edwin Muir.
