Corrie (which means "An Coire" in Scottish Gaelic) is a small village. It is located on the northeast coast of the Isle of Arran in Scotland. Corrie is about 6 miles (10 km) north of Brodick.

The village sits just east of Goat Fell, Arran's tallest mountain. A path from High Corrie, a smaller area nearby, helps people reach the hillside. Corrie and its northern neighbor, Sannox, are roughly halfway between Brodick and Lochranza.

History of Corrie

Corrie used to be a regular stop for steamships. These ships sailed around the Isle of Arran. Passengers would get on and off using a small rowing boat. This boat would pick them up from a special spot called the "ferry rock."

The ferry rock is found between the village's two main docks, called quays. The quay to the south is known as the "sandstone quay." This dock was once used to ship large blocks of sandstone. These blocks came from a nearby quarry and were sent to the mainland. You can still see huge pieces of stone there today. Sandstone from Corrie was even used to build Kirn & Sandbank Parish Church.

The sheep-shaped posts on the quay walls have an interesting story. They were moved to Corrie after being used in the 1988 Glasgow Garden Festival. The northern quay is called "Corrie port." It was also used to ship goods to other parts of the island, the mainland, and other islands. Small cargo ships, known as Clyde puffers, were common sights here.

Corrie also had a limestone "mine." The roof of this mine is covered with fossils of ancient sea creatures called Gigantoproductus.

Geography and Nature

Just north of Corrie's neighbor, Sannox, the main A841 road leaves the coast. It then climbs northwest over North Glen Sannox towards Lochranza.

Corrie is also home to the Corrie Golf Club. This club was started way back in 1892. It has a 9-hole course that is 3,896 yards (3,563 m) long. The course is on a hillside and offers amazing views. From here, you can see the Firth of Clyde and the beautiful Arran mountains.

Culture and Art

High Corrie (An Coire Àrd in Scottish Gaelic) is a small area above the main village. It has always been a favorite spot for artists. Famous artists like Joan Eardley and Margot Sandeman enjoyed working there.

A summer art school was once held in High Corrie. It was run by the artist Jessie M. King. The poet and writer Robert McLellan also spent time in this peaceful place.

Today, there is a special event called the McLellan Festival. This week-long festival celebrates Robert McLellan and local culture. It includes poetry, art, music, films, and plays.

Community Life

The number of people living in Corrie has been decreasing. In January 2008, only 15 students attended the village's primary school. It was expected that this number would drop even further to just 5 by 2012.

The Corrie Seal, a sculpture by local sculptor Marvin Elliott

'Clyde' The Corrie Seal is a wooden statue of a seal. It was made by a local artist named Marvin Elliot in 2008. This statue is a well-known landmark in Corrie. It sits on a rock just off the coast.

Clyde the seal is so realistic that he often confuses people. Both tourists and locals sometimes wonder if he is a real seal! Real seals are often seen in this area. Sometimes, they even join Clyde on his rock.

Even though Clyde is secured with a metal pole, he has been washed away many times. He has traveled to some surprising places, including:

  • Turnberry on the Scottish Mainland
  • Troon on the Scottish Mainland
  • Lubas Bay on the Isle of Bute
