Santa Ysabel is a small, unincorporated community in the eastern part of San Diego County, California. The name "Santa Ysabel" comes from Spanish and means "St. Elizabeth." In the Kumeyaay language, the area is called Ellykwanan.
History of Santa Ysabel
Santa Ysabel has a long and interesting history. In 1818, a special building called the Santa Ysabel Asistencia was built here. An asistencia was like a smaller branch of a main Spanish mission. This one was connected to Mission San Diego de Alcalá.
The land where Santa Ysabel is located was once part of a large area called Rancho Santa Ysabel. This land was given as a grant by the Mexican government in 1844 to José Joaquín Ortega and Eduardo Stokes.
The town of Santa Ysabel really started to grow in 1878. A man named C. R. Wellington opened a store, and soon after, a hotel and a blacksmith shop were added. The community even got its own post office on June 26, 1889.
