Santiago Lanzuela Marina (born September 27, 1948 – died April 16, 2020) was an important Spanish economist and politician. He was a member of the People's Party (PP). He is best known for being the President of the Government of Aragon. Aragon is one of Spain's regions, and he led its government.
Early Life and Career
Santiago Lanzuela was born in Teruel, Spain. He studied to become an economist. In 1974, he started working in government. He became the head of an office that helped Spain work with Nicaragua. Later, from 1976 to 1981, he was a director in the Spanish Employment Ministry.
In 1987, Lanzuela was elected to the Aragonese Regional Assembly. This is like a regional parliament. In 1989, his party, the PP, formed a government with another party called the Aragonese Party (PAR). In this government, Lanzuela served as the Minister of Economics until 1993.
President of Aragon
On May 28, 1995, the PP won the most votes in the regional elections in Aragon. Because he was the main candidate for the PP, Santiago Lanzuela was chosen as the President of Aragon. He won against Ángela Abós Ballarín from the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).
In the 1999 elections, the PP gained more votes and seats. However, the PAR decided to support the candidate from the rival PSOE party instead. This meant Lanzuela was not re-elected as President.
Later Political Career
After leaving the role of President of Aragon, Santiago Lanzuela continued his political career. In the 2000 General Election, he was elected to the Spanish Congress. This is the main parliament for all of Spain. He represented the Teruel area. He was re-elected in the next elections in 2004 and 2008, serving for many years.
Death
Santiago Lanzuela died on April 16, 2020, in Madrid. He was 71 years old. His death was caused by COVID-19.
