A Look at History
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.

In 1899, the United States government counted the people living in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, showed that the combined population of Santiago y Lima and a nearby barrio called Río was 902 people.

In September 2017, Hurricane María caused a lot of damage across Puerto Rico. Some of the wind turbines in Punta Lima were also damaged by the strong winds of the hurricane.
