As a commune, Santo Domingo has its own local government. This government is run by a group called the municipal council. The council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The people of Santo Domingo vote directly for their alcalde every four years. From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Fernando Rodríguez Larraín.

The people of Santo Domingo also have representatives in the national government of Chile. These representatives speak for the city in important meetings.
In the Chamber of Deputies, which is one part of Chile's parliament, Santo Domingo is represented by María José Hoffmann and Víctor Torres. They are part of a larger area called the 15th electoral district. This district includes other nearby cities like San Antonio and Cartagena.
In the Senate of Chile, which is the other part of Chile's parliament, Santo Domingo is represented by Francisco Chahuán Chahuán and Ricardo Lagos Weber. They represent the Valparaíso-Coast area.
