Sarah Contos is an Australian artist. She is famous for her unique artworks, which often combine different materials. Her art includes collages and large installations. She has won many art awards. Sarah was the very first winner of the $100,000 Ramsay Art Prize at the Art Gallery of South Australia.

Studying Art

Sarah Contos studied art and design. In 1998, she earned a Diploma of Fine Arts. She studied at the Central Metropolitan College of TAFE in Perth, Western Australia.

Later, in 2004, she studied Design for Performance. This helped her work on theatre costumes and set designs. She studied at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Sarah also completed a Masters of Art in Painting. She studied at the College of Fine Arts, which is now part of UNSW Art & Design.

Her Art Style

Sarah Contos creates art using many different materials. She often combines textiles (fabrics), screen printing, and found objects. She also uses paint in her artworks. Her art style is often described as collage, sculpture, and large art installations.

In 2009, Sarah moved to Sydney to focus on her art career. She started working with a gallery owner, Roslyn Oxley, in 2015.

In 2018, Sarah lived and worked at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. She also created a special art installation for the National Gallery of Australia. It was called Nikola Tesla Sends Theda Bara to Mars.

In 2019, Sarah was one of four artists who made unique art installations. These were for the Sofitel Darling Harbour during Sydney Contemporary.

Sarah works from her art studio. Another Australian artist, Daniel Mudie Cunningham, visited her studio. He described it as a fun and colorful place. He said it was full of interesting shapes and textures.

Art Awards

Sarah Contos has received many awards for her art.

In 2011, she was one of six artists to win a Marten Bequest scholarship.

In 2013, she was a finalist for the John Fries Award. She also won a special study program in Beijing. This was with 4A and two other artists, Tully Arnot and Jensen Tjhung.

In 2014, her artwork was part of the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize. The piece was called Personification of Past and Future Mythologies (Double-Headed Barry).

In 2017, Sarah won the very first $100,000 Ramsay Art Prize. She won this award at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Her winning artwork was called Long Kiss Goodbye.
