Saunders Beach is located about 32.8 kilometers (20.4 miles) north-west of the main part of Townsville.

Where is Saunders Beach?

The town is right next to the beautiful Coral Sea on its north and east sides. To the west, you'll find Althaus Creek (19°09′09″S 146°36′06″E / 19.15250°S 146.60167°E / -19.15250; 146.60167 (Althaus Creek (mouth))).

The main part of the town is just south-east of where Althaus Creek meets the sea. The beach itself stretches for about 5.6 kilometers (3.5 miles). It goes from Althaus Creek all the way to the mouth of Black River.

Saunders Beach started as a separate area on March 17, 1984. It officially became a suburb on February 28, 2003.

Protecting the Beach

In 2004, the local council created a special plan. This plan was made to understand why the beach was wearing away (called erosion). It also helped them find ways to protect the beach from future damage. This way, everyone can keep enjoying the beach for a long time!

Crocodile Sighting

In September 2021, something exciting happened! A large crocodile, about 3.8 meters (12.5 feet) long, was caught in Althaus Creek. People had seen it near the boat ramps. Wildlife officers thought it was attracted by fish scraps left by fishermen. They reminded everyone to throw away their trash properly to keep both people and wildlife safe.

The Saunders Beach Community Centre is a central meeting place. The local fire station is also right there (19°09′30″S 146°36′10″E / 19.1583°S 146.6027°E / -19.1583; 146.6027 (Saunders Beach Rural Fire Station)). The Townsville City Council even has a mobile library that visits the community centre every two weeks!

Boating Adventures

If you love boating, you're in luck! There are two boat ramps in Saunders Beach. Both are managed by the Townsville City Council.

  • One boat ramp is on Boat Ramp Road (19°09′25″S 146°35′57″E / 19.1570°S 146.5993°E / -19.1570; 146.5993 (Boat Ramp Road boat ramp)). It's on the south side of Althaus Creek.
  • The other is on Purono Parkway (19°09′45″S 146°35′50″E / 19.1625°S 146.5973°E / -19.1625; 146.5973 (Purono Parkway boat ramp)). This one is also on the south side of the creek, a bit further upstream.

Beach and Parks

Saunders Beach is a fantastic place to visit. You can even find free camping spots at the northern end of the beach. Besides the boat ramps, there are also parks with playgrounds for kids. It's a great place to spend time outdoors!
