Scharans (in Romansh: Scharons) is a small town, also called a municipality, in the Viamala Region of Swiss canton of Graubünden. It's a great place to learn about Swiss history and nature!

History of Scharans

Scharans was first mentioned in old documents in the year 1200. Back then, it was known as agrum Schraunis. This shows that people have lived here for a very long time!

Scharans covers an area of about 14.3 square kilometers (5.5 square miles). A big part of this land, about 62%, is covered by forests. About 26% of the land is used for farming.

Before 2017, Scharans was part of a different area called the Domleschg sub-district. Now, it is part of the Viamala Region. The town of Scharans is a haufendorf. This means it's an old village that grew without a clear plan, with houses built close together around a central area. Scharans also includes smaller villages called hamlets, such as St. Agata, Stufels, Parnegl, and Prin. It is located on a low hill near the Albula and Hinterrhein rivers.
