A Look Back: Scofield's History
Scofield began to be settled around 1872. This was when a railway line was built through the area. The Chicago and Canada Southern Railway built this line, and Scofield had a station along its route.
Railroad and Post Office
The railway line still runs just southeast of the community's center today. It is now operated by the Canadian National Railway. However, there is no longer a train station in Scofield.
A post office first opened in Scofield on January 20, 1874. It served the community for many years before closing on September 15, 1935.
The McGowan School and Township Halls
The historic McGowan School building is located in Scofield. This school started operating in the 1860s. The building you see today was built around 1888. It was a one-room schoolhouse. It stayed open until 1996 when the area's schools joined to form Airport Community Schools.
After closing, the McGowan School was restored. It was moved to Scofield in 2003. Now, it is used as a rental hall and is in a park behind the current township hall. The current township hall is at 6158 Scofield Road.
The original Exeter Township Hall was built in 1890. It is located at 10296 Sumpter Road in Scofield. This building is no longer used as a township hall. It was recognized as a Michigan State Historic Site on September 3, 1998.
Scofield remains a small community with a few businesses. Road signs along Scofield Road and Sumpter Road call it the "village of Scofield." However, it is not an officially incorporated village and does not have its own local government.
