Exeter Township is home to several communities, each with its own history.
Past Settlements
- East Exeter was a settlement that once had its own post office. This post office was open for a short time, from March 1850 to October 1851.
- Exeter is another historic community. It also had a post office, first from 1840 to 1842, and then again from 1850 to 1903.
Current Communities
- Maybee is a small village located in the southwestern part of the township. It has its own post office with the ZIP Code 48159. This post office serves Maybee and parts of Exeter Township.
- Scofield is an unincorporated community. This means it's a recognized place but doesn't have its own separate local government like a village or city. Scofield is located northeast of Maybee.
Geography and Nature
Exeter Township is in the northern part of Monroe County. It shares its northern border with Wayne County.
Location and Size
The center of the township is about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Monroe. Monroe is the main city and county seat for Monroe County.
The township covers a total area of about 36.65 square miles (94.92 km2). Most of this area, 36.54 square miles (94.64 km2), is land. Only a small part, about 0.11 square miles (0.28 km2), is water.
Waterways
Several creeks flow through Exeter Township.
- Stony Creek runs through the middle of the township.
- Swan Creek crosses the northeastern part.
- Sandy Creek flows through the southwestern corner, right through the village of Maybee.
All these creeks flow southeast and eventually empty into Lake Erie. They are called "tributaries" because they feed into a larger body of water.
