Scott J. Ratliff, born on January 19, 1943, is an American politician from the state of Wyoming. He is a member of the Eastern Shoshone tribe. Mr. Ratliff made history as the first Native American to be elected to the Wyoming State Legislature. He served as a representative for Fremont County, Wyoming from 1980 to 1992.
Early Life and Education
Scott Ratliff was born in Fort Washakie, Wyoming, in 1943. He grew up near his family's horse ranch north of Pavillion, Wyoming. He went to Pavillion High School.
After high school, Mr. Ratliff continued his education. He earned degrees from Arapahoe Community College and Black Hills State College in 1971. He then received another degree from the University of Wyoming in 1973. He holds a master's degree in guidance and counseling. This education helped him work as a counselor at Eastern Wyoming College and Central Wyoming College. He also served in the Vietnam War.
Public Service and Community Work
After his time as a state representative, Mr. Ratliff continued to serve his community. He joined several important groups. These included the Wyoming State Council on Juvenile Justice and the Wyoming Cowboy Hall of Fame Board. He also worked with the Shoshone Economic Board and the Wyoming State Board of Tribal Economics. He was part of the National Advisory Council on Indian Education.
In 1990, Mr. Ratliff received a human rights award. This award was given by the Wyoming Counseling Association. He is married to Sheri, and they have three daughters. Mr. Ratliff also worked for Senator Mike Enzi. He helped with issues related to the Wind River Indian Reservation.
