Scott Snyder (born January 15, 1976) is a well-known American comic book writer. He is famous for his work with DC Comics, where he has written many popular series. These include American Vampire, Detective Comics, and a very popular series of Batman stories. He also wrote Swamp Thing and Justice League. Scott Snyder also created big comic book events like "Dark Nights: Metal" and "Dark Nights: Death Metal."

Besides his work for DC, he has created his own comics published by Image Comics. Some of these are Wytches, Undiscovered Country, and Nocterra. Snyder helped create famous characters like The Batman Who Laughs, Mr. Bloom, and the Court of Owls. Critics and fans really like his work, especially his Batman series from 2011. He has won many awards, including three Eisner Awards and a Harvey Award.

Early Life and Education

Scott Snyder was born on January 15, 1976. When he was nine, a summer camp counselor read Stephen King's book Eyes of the Dragon to him. Snyder says this experience made him love storytelling. He was also inspired by other writers like Stephen King and Alan Moore.

Snyder went to Brown University and graduated in 1998. He studied creative writing. After college, he worked at Walt Disney World Resort for about a year. He started as a cleaner and later worked as some of the characters. Snyder says his time at Disney World helped his writing a lot. He learned about fears like growing up and losing loved ones. He then earned a master's degree in fiction from Columbia University.

Early Works and Marvel Comics

Scott Snyder's first collection of stories was called Voodoo Heart. It was published in June 2006. This book received great reviews and was even shortlisted for The Story Prize. Stephen King chose two of Snyder's stories for a famous anthology in 2007.

In 2008, Snyder wrote a short story called The Thirteenth Egg. In 2009, he started writing for Marvel Comics. He wrote a story about the first Human Torch. He also wrote a four-issue comic series called Iron Man: Noir in 2010. Before becoming a full-time comic writer, Snyder taught writing at several universities.

Breakthrough at DC Comics

In March 2010, Vertigo started publishing American Vampire. This was Snyder's first comic series that he fully owned. The first five issues even had a story by Stephen King. American Vampire won the 2011 Eisner Award and the 2011 Harvey Award for Best New Series.

Snyder began writing for Detective Comics in January 2011. This marked the start of his special contract with DC Comics. He also co-wrote the Batman: Gates of Gotham series.

In September 2011, DC Comics relaunched all its titles in an event called The New 52. Snyder became the writer for the new Batman and Swamp Thing series. His Batman series was very popular and received much praise. He also co-wrote Talon, a spin-off from his "Court of Owls" storyline in Batman.

In 2012, it was announced that Snyder would write a new Superman series called Superman Unchained. This series started in June 2013. Snyder also wrote The Wake, a 10-issue horror series about the ocean. It featured strange, human-like creatures from the deep sea.

Snyder was one of the writers for the Batman Eternal series, which began in April 2014. He also launched the Image Comics series Wytches with artist Jock. In 2016, Snyder worked with artist John Romita Jr. on the All-Star Batman series.

Major Events and Recent Projects

In August 2017, Snyder and Greg Capullo launched the big event series Dark Nights: Metal. Snyder also co-wrote Justice League: No Justice and then relaunched the main Justice League series.

In 2018, Snyder launched Batman and the Signal, a mini-series about Duke Thomas. He also released The Batman Who Laughs in 2019, a spin-off from Dark Nights: Metal. In 2020, Snyder and Greg Capullo released Batman: Last Knight on Earth. They also launched Dark Nights: Death Metal, which was a follow-up to Dark Nights: Metal.

Snyder's Image series Nocterra started in March 2021. A TV show based on Nocterra is being developed by Netflix. In July 2021, Snyder announced a deal for eight digital-first comics. These books are published through his company, Best Jackett Press. They include We Have Demons, Clear, and Night of the Ghoul. A movie based on Night of the Ghoul is also being developed.

In February 2023, Amazon Prime Video announced an animated TV series based on Wytches. Snyder is one of the showrunners for this series. In July 2024, DC Comics announced that Snyder would return to lead "DC All In." This initiative introduces new characters and titles for the Absolute Universe. Snyder is also co-writing DC All In Special #1.

In January 2025, it was announced that a film adaptation of Dark Spaces: Dungeon is being made. This horror mini-series was written by Snyder and published in 2023-2024.

Personal Life

Scott Snyder is married to Jeanie and they have three sons. The family lives in Long Island.
