Scott Wayne Barnes Jr. (born August 1, 2001) is a professional basketball player from the United States. He plays for the Toronto Raptors in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before joining the NBA, he played college basketball for the Florida State Seminoles.
In 2021, as a freshman, he was named to the third-team All-ACC. The Toronto Raptors chose him as the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft. Barnes won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2022. In 2024, he was chosen for his first NBA All-Star Game.

Scottie Barnes' High School Journey
Scottie Barnes started his high school basketball career at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Florida. As a freshman, he helped his team achieve a 19–8 record. He was recognized as a second-team All-Area player and a MaxPreps Freshman All-American.
After his freshman year, Barnes moved to NSU University School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There, he played alongside Vernon Carey Jr., who was a top-ranked junior player.
Winning State Titles
In his sophomore year, Barnes helped his team win their first-ever Class 5A state title. They had an impressive 36–2 record. He was named the most valuable player (MVP) of the City of Palms Classic tournament. His team also finished as runners-up at GEICO Nationals.
During his junior season, Barnes continued to lead his team to success. They won a second straight 5A state title. Even though Carey was injured, Barnes helped his team to a 27–5 record. Future NBA players Taylor Hendricks and Jett Howard were also on this team.
Joining Montverde Academy
On August 5, 2019, Barnes decided to transfer to Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida. He joined other talented players like Cade Cunningham and Day'Ron Sharpe. Many experts believed this team was one of the best in high school basketball history.
Montverde Academy finished with a perfect 25–0 record. They won their games by a large margin, averaging 39 points. Barnes earned All-American first-team honors from MaxPreps and Sports Illustrated. He was selected for several important games, including the McDonald's All-American Game. However, these games were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Choosing a College Team
Scottie Barnes was a highly sought-after player by colleges. Experts considered him one of the top players in the 2020 recruiting class. On October 14, 2019, Barnes announced he would play college basketball for Florida State. He chose Florida State over other major programs like Kentucky and Miami (Florida).

College Basketball Career
On March 13, 2021, Barnes scored his highest college points total with 21 points. This happened in a close game against Georgia Tech at the ACC tournament championship.
As a freshman, he averaged 10.3 points, 4.1 assists, and 4 rebounds per game. He earned several awards, including ACC Freshman of the Year. He was also named ACC Sixth Man of the Year and made the third-team All-ACC. On April 9, he decided to enter the 2021 NBA draft, ending his college career early.
Professional Basketball Career
Playing for the Toronto Raptors (2021–Present)
The Toronto Raptors chose Scottie Barnes as the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft. Many people were surprised by this choice, as they expected the Raptors to pick another player. On August 8, 2021, Barnes officially signed his contract with the Raptors.
He made his NBA debut on October 20, 2021. In that game, he scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Just two days later, on October 22, he achieved his first career double-double. He scored 25 points and had 13 rebounds in a win against the Boston Celtics.
Rookie of the Year and All-Star
Throughout his first season, Barnes showed great skill. On January 21, 2022, he scored a career-high 27 points against the Washington Wizards. He continued to improve, scoring 28 points twice in February 2022. On March 3, he was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for February.
On March 18, Barnes set a new career-high with 31 points and 17 rebounds. He played in 74 games during his rookie season, starting all of them. He averaged 15.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game.
On April 23, 2022, Scottie Barnes was named the NBA Rookie of the Year. He became the first Raptor to win this award in 23 years. He was also only the third Raptor ever to receive this honor.
On November 4, 2022, Barnes achieved his first career triple-double. He had 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in a game against the Dallas Mavericks. On March 10, 2023, he scored a then-career-high 32 points against the Los Angeles Lakers.
On February 6, 2024, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver selected Barnes as an injury replacement for the 2024 NBA All-Star Game. This was Barnes' first time playing in the NBA All-Star Game. He scored 16 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and had 3 assists in the game.
On July 8, 2024, Barnes signed a large 5-year contract extension with the Raptors. This deal made him the highest-paid player in the team's history. His new contract will start in the 2025–2026 season and last until the 2029–2030 NBA season.
On December 3, 2024, Barnes scored a career-high 35 points in a win against the Indiana Pacers. On April 13, 2025, he tied his career-high with 35 points, along with 11 rebounds and 8 assists, in a game against the San Antonio Spurs.
Playing for the National Team
Scottie Barnes has also represented the United States in international competitions. He won a gold medal at the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship in Argentina. He averaged 9.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game in that tournament.
He won another gold medal at the 2018 FIBA Under-17 World Cup in Argentina. There, he averaged 9.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Barnes earned his third gold medal with the United States at the 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup in Greece.
