Scottie Austin Montgomery, born on May 26, 1978, is an American football coach. He currently works for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL). He is the assistant head coach and also coaches the wide receivers. Before this, he was the running backs coach and assistant head coach for the Lions.
Scottie Montgomery has held many important coaching roles. He was a running backs coach for the Indianapolis Colts. He also served as an offensive coordinator at the University of Maryland. Before that, he was the head football coach at East Carolina University. He also coached at Duke University and for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL. Montgomery grew up in North Carolina and played as a wide receiver in college and in the NFL.

Scottie Montgomery's Early Life and Sports
Scottie Montgomery went to Burns High School in Lawndale, North Carolina. He was a fantastic athlete in football, basketball, and track. In football, he was named the team's Most Valuable Player (MVP) twice. As a junior, he helped his team win the State 3A championship.
In basketball, he earned All-Conference honors and was also named the Team MVP. For track and field, he won All-Conference honors. He was the conference champion in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.
Scottie Montgomery's College Football Career
Montgomery played college football at Duke University from 1996 to 1999. He had a very successful career there. He finished with 171 catches, which is the second-highest in Duke's history. He also gained 2,379 receiving yards, ranking third all-time for the team.
He had four games where he caught for over 100 yards. He also scored 13 touchdowns during his time at Duke. Montgomery was named the team's MVP in both 1998 and 1999. This made him one of only five players in Duke's history to win the MVP award twice.
Scottie Montgomery's Professional Playing Career
Scottie Montgomery joined the National Football League (NFL) in 2000. He started his professional career with the Carolina Panthers. After that, he played for the Denver Broncos for three years, from 2000 to 2002.
In 2003, he played for the Oakland Raiders. Later, in 2005, Montgomery played in the Arena Football League for the Georgia Force.
Scottie Montgomery's Coaching Journey
Scottie Montgomery started his coaching career at his old college, Duke University. He coached the wide receivers there for four seasons, from 2006 to 2009.
In 2010, the Pittsburgh Steelers hired Montgomery as their wide receivers coach. He stayed with the Steelers for three seasons. During his time there, he coached many talented players. These included Mike Wallace, Hines Ward, Emmanuel Sanders, and Antonio Brown.
Montgomery returned to Duke University in 2013. He took on several important roles, including associate head coach and offensive coordinator. He also continued to coach the wide receivers. In 2014, Duke promoted him to be their main offensive coordinator.
In December 2015, East Carolina University named Scottie Montgomery their new head football coach. He coached the team for three seasons. His overall record as a head coach at East Carolina was 9 wins and 26 losses. He was no longer the head coach before the end of the 2018 season.
In 2019, Montgomery joined the University of Maryland as their offensive coordinator. He coached there for two seasons.
In February 2021, the Indianapolis Colts announced that Montgomery would be their running backs coach. He worked with the Colts for two seasons.
On February 6, 2023, Scottie Montgomery joined the Detroit Lions as their running backs coach. As of February 13, 2025, he was promoted by the Lions. He is now the assistant head coach and wide receivers coach for the team.
