Scottie Austin Montgomery (born May 26, 1978) is an American football coach. He is currently the assistant head coach and running backs coach for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the Lions, he coached for the Indianapolis Colts. He also worked as an offensive coordinator at the University of Maryland.

Before that, he was the head football coach at East Carolina University. Montgomery also served as an assistant coach at Duke University and for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He grew up in North Carolina and played wide receiver for Duke and in the NFL.

Early Life and Sports

Scottie Montgomery went to Burns High School in Lawndale, North Carolina. He was a great athlete in football, basketball, and track. In football, he was named the team's most valuable player (MVP) twice. As a junior, he helped his team win the State 3A championship.

He also earned All-Conference honors in basketball and track. In track, he was the conference champion in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.

College Football Career

Montgomery played football at Duke University from 1996 to 1999. He caught 171 passes during his college career. This placed him second in Duke's history for receptions. He also gained 2,379 receiving yards, which was third all-time at Duke.

He scored 13 touchdowns and had four games where he gained over 100 receiving yards. Scottie was named the team's MVP in both 1998 and 1999. He is one of only five players in Duke history to win this award twice.

Professional Playing Career

Scottie Montgomery started his professional football career in 2000. He joined the Carolina Panthers as a rookie free agent. After that, he played for the Denver Broncos from 2000 to 2002. In 2003, he played for the Oakland Raiders.

In 2005, he played for the Georgia Force in the Arena Football League.

Coaching Career

Montgomery began his coaching journey at his old college, Duke University. He coached the wide receivers there for four seasons, from 2006 to 2009.

In 2010, the Pittsburgh Steelers hired him as their wide receivers coach. He stayed with the Steelers for three seasons. During his time there, he coached famous players like Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown.

Montgomery went back to Duke in 2013. He became an associate head coach and helped lead the offense. He also continued to coach the wide receivers. In 2014, Duke promoted him to be the main offensive coordinator.

In December 2015, East Carolina University named Scottie Montgomery their new head coach. He coached the team for three seasons. His overall record as head coach there was 9 wins and 26 losses.

After East Carolina, Montgomery joined the University of Maryland in 2019. He worked as their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He coached there for two seasons.

In February 2021, the Indianapolis Colts hired Montgomery as their running backs coach. Then, in February 2023, he joined the Detroit Lions. He is currently the assistant head coach and running backs coach for the Lions.
