Scottsburg is a small place in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. It's called an unincorporated community because it doesn't have its own city government. Scottsburg is located right by the Umpqua River and Oregon Route 38. It's about 20 miles (32 km) away from the Pacific Ocean.

Scottsburg was named after an early settler and important person named Levi Scott. It used to be a busy and growing town. However, after a very big flood in 1862, the town started to get smaller.

A River Town with a Past

Scottsburg was once a very important place for travel and trade. It was located at the point on the Umpqua River where boats could go no further upstream. This spot was about 20 miles (32 km) from the ocean.

For a short time in the 1850s and 1860s, Scottsburg acted like a small seaport. It helped connect the coast with the inland areas of Southern Oregon.

How People Traveled Through Scottsburg

Scottsburg was a key stop for travelers. People would take a stagecoach from a town called Drain, Oregon all the way to Scottsburg. Once they arrived in Scottsburg, they would switch to a steamboat. These steamboats would then carry them down the Umpqua River to Gardiner, Oregon, which is closer to the ocean.

Famous People from Scottsburg

  • Janet J. McCoy was an important person who served as the High Commissioner of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. This was a special role where she helped govern a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean.
