Club Career Highlights
Sebastian Deisler began playing football at a young age. He joined his first club, FV Tumringen, when he was just six years old. His talent was noticed early on.
Playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach
When Sebastian was 15, Borussia Mönchengladbach signed him. This was a big step for him. He played for their junior teams from 1995 to 1998. He started his professional career with the club in 1998. His first game in the Bundesliga was on 8 September.
During the 1998–99 season, he played 17 games in the Bundesliga. He scored one goal in a 2–0 win against 1860 Munich. However, his team finished last that season. They were then moved down to the second division.
Moving to Hertha BSC
Because Borussia Mönchengladbach was relegated, Sebastian moved to Hertha BSC in 1999. The club in Berlin offered him a chance to play in the Champions League. This was a big opportunity for him.
Even though he was only 19, Sebastian became an important player for Hertha BSC. He helped control the midfield. However, he faced a serious knee injury in 1999. Later, in October 2001, he had another knee injury. This meant he missed the rest of that season.
Around this time, news came out that Sebastian had agreed to join FC Bayern Munich. He was set to move to Bayern at the start of the 2002–03 season. Some fans and media were upset because he had not announced this sooner. Sebastian later said that his manager asked him to keep it a secret. During his time at Hertha, Sebastian helped the team win the 2001 DFB-Ligapokal.
Time at Bayern Munich
In July 2002, Sebastian joined Bayern Munich. He signed a four-year contract. He arrived at Bayern with a knee injury from the season before. His time at the club was quite difficult. He only played 62 league games in four and a half years.
Because of his many injuries, he could not play regularly for long periods. He also found it hard to deal with the high pressure at Bayern. He started to feel very sad and stressed, and he received treatment for this in November 2003. After a few months, he returned to the team. But he had another difficult period in October 2004.
Sebastian seemed to be getting better in the 2004–05 season. He played most of 2005. After Michael Ballack left, Sebastian was expected to lead Bayern's midfield. But he injured his right knee again in March 2006. This meant he missed the World Cup that was held in Germany.
He came back to play in November. However, he felt very tired and lacked confidence in his injured knee. He announced his retirement on 16 January 2007. He said he felt he was not suited for the world of professional football. Bayern's general manager said Sebastian's contract would be put on hold.
International Career
Sebastian Deisler played for the German national team from 2000 to 2006. He played in 36 international games and scored three goals. His first game for Germany was against the Netherlands on 23 February 2000.
He was part of the German team at the Euro 2000 tournament. He played in all three group matches. Germany did not do well and left the competition early. On 2 September 2000, he scored his first goal for Germany. It was in a 2–0 win over Greece during a World Cup qualifying game.
Due to his injuries, he missed both the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups. He also missed UEFA Euro 2004. In 2005, he played in all five of Germany's games at the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup in Germany. His last game for the German national team was a friendly match against Italy on 1 March 2006.
