Second Epistle of Peter facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Second Epistle of Peter is a book in the Christian Bible. It's the 61st book overall and the 22nd in the New Testament. Many people believe this book is a letter written by Peter. Peter was one of Jesus's closest followers, also known as a disciple.

When Was This Important Letter Written?

If Peter truly wrote this letter, it was likely written between 65 and 69 A.D. This is because Peter was killed by Nero, the emperor of Rome, around 69 A.D. The letter itself hints at this, saying, "I know that the putting off of my body will be soon." This is found in Chapter 1, verse 14.

However, some people think a follower of Peter wrote the book later. If that's the case, it could have been written anytime between 60 and 160 A.D. People have debated who wrote it for a long time. But in the end, most Christians accepted this letter as a part of the Bible.

What's Inside This Bible Letter?

This letter is quite different from Peter's first letter, called 1 Peter. They have different styles and topics.

The Second Epistle of Peter mentions many parts of the Old Testament. In Chapter 3, verses 15 and 16, it even talks about one of Paul's letters. This is probably 1 Thessalonians chapters 4 and 5. Peter calls Paul's writings scripture. He also says they can be hard to understand, and some people try to change their meaning.

The letter starts with a friendly greeting. Then, the writer tells Christians to live a good life. This means having faith, knowledge, self-control, and love. In Chapter 2, there are warnings about teachers who might spread wrong ideas. Chapter 3 teaches about the Second Coming of Jesus. This is when Jesus is believed to return to Earth. The letter finishes by reminding Christians to live correctly. It ends with a final blessing.
