Section is built on land where the Cherokee people once lived and hunted. The first name for this community was Mt. Zion. This was when the first post office opened.
How Section Got Its Name
Several smaller communities came together to form the town of Section. These included places like Kirby's Creek and Gossets Hollow. Pioneer settlers started arriving in large numbers around 1862. They had to live on the land for five years to claim it.
The town became known as "Section" because of a special rule. The federal government required a square-mile piece of land, called the 16th Section, to be set aside. This land was meant to help support public schools.
Early Businesses and Schools
In 1886, Bort Harrison ran a mill that used water power. It helped grind flour and corn. The first store in the community was built a few years later in 1889.
The very first school in the area was built before 1890. Sadly, it burned down that same year. Its replacement school lasted for 25 years before it also burned. Section officially became a town in 1946.
