The Segre is an important river in Europe. It flows through three different countries: France, Andorra, and Spain. The Segre is a tributary of the Ebro River. This means it's a smaller river that flows into a larger one. The area of land that collects water for the Segre River is called its basin.
Long ago, the Segre River was known by different names. The Romans and Greeks called it Sicoris. Later, the Arabs of Al-Andalus knew it as Nahr az-Zaytūn, which means "river of Olives".
The Segre River starts high up in the Pyrenees mountains. Its source (where it begins) is on the northern side of a peak called Pic del Segre in France. From there, it flows west through the Cerdanya Valley. It passes through towns like Saillagouse, the Spanish area of Llívia, and Bourg-Madame.

Where Does the Segre River Flow?
The Segre River enters Spain at a town called Puigcerdà. It keeps flowing west until it reaches La Seu d'Urgell. Here, another river, the Valira River, joins it from Andorra.
After this, the Segre turns southwest. It flows through the lower parts of the Pyrenees mountains and the flat lands of Catalonia. Along its path, there are several dams built in its narrow valleys. The river then goes through cities like Balaguer and Lleida. Finally, it joins the Ebro River at Mequinenza.
Rivers That Join the Segre
Many smaller rivers flow into the Segre, adding to its water. These are called its tributaries. Some of the main ones include:
- Valira (from Andorra)
- Noguera Pallaresa
- Noguera Ribagorzana
- Cinca
The Segre River in Lleida
The Segre River is a very important part of the city of Lleida in Spain. It actually divides the city into two parts. Throughout history, the river has sometimes flooded, causing problems for the city. The last big flood happened in the late 1970s.
There is a dam on the river near Lleida, close to a natural park called La Mitjana. Another park, Els Camps Elisis, is also right next to the Segre River. These parks are great places for people to enjoy nature by the river.
Bridges Over the Segre in Lleida
Because the river splits Lleida, many bridges have been built to connect the two sides of the city. These bridges help people and cars cross the river easily. Some of the bridges in Lleida are:
- Pont Vell
- Pont del Ferrocarril
