A Look at Selden's Past
Selden was first planned out in 1888. It was named after one of the people who helped start the town, Selden G. Hopkins. The first post office in Selden opened its doors in July 1888.
Major Weather Events
Selden has experienced some memorable weather. On June 3, 1959, a very strong thunderstorm hit the town. It dropped a huge amount of hail, about 18 inches (46 cm) deep! The hail fell for a record 85 minutes.
During this storm, the temperature dropped quickly from 80°F (27°C) to 38°F (3°C). The hail completely destroyed all the crops in the area, causing big losses for farmers.
More recently, on May 24, 2021, an EF1 tornado struck the community. This tornado was strong enough to flip over a train and damage several buildings. One person was injured during the storm.

Education in Selden
The Golden Plains USD 316 public school district serves the community of Selden. This school district was formed when schools from Menlo, Rexford, and Selden joined together. The high school's mascot is the Bulldogs.
Selden High School used to be its own school but closed after the schools combined. The Selden Wildcats, the old high school team, won the Kansas State High School class B baseball championship in 1958.
Getting Around Selden
Selden is located right on U.S. Route 83. This highway runs alongside the tracks of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. Today, the Kyle Railroad operates these train tracks.
