Senate facts for kids
In a modern democracy, a senate is a group of people who help make and change laws for a country or state. This group is part of a larger body called a legislature. The people who work in a senate are called senators.
Many legislatures have two main groups, or houses, that work together. This is called a bicameral system. One house might be called the Senate, or the House of Senators. The other house is often called the House of Representatives or House of Commons. For a new bill (a proposed law) to become a real law, both houses must agree on it. Countries like the USA, Canada, and Australia have senates as part of their law-making system.
The very first senate was the Roman Senate in ancient Rome. Its name came from a Latin word meaning "elder," because it was originally made up of older, experienced leaders.
Sometimes, the main ruling group of a university is also called a senate.

What is a Legislature?
A legislature is a group of people chosen to make or change laws for a country, state, or city. Think of them as the rule-makers. They discuss ideas, vote on them, and decide what rules everyone should follow.
How Senates Work
In countries with two houses, the senate often has special jobs. For example, senators might represent different regions or states equally, no matter how many people live there. This helps make sure smaller areas have a strong voice.
Senates often review laws that have already been passed by the other house. They can suggest changes or even reject a law. This helps make sure laws are well-thought-out before they become official.
Famous Senates in History
The Ancient Roman Senate
The Roman Senate was one of the most powerful groups in ancient Rome. It started as a group of advisors to the king. Later, it became a very important part of the Roman Republic and Empire. Senators were usually older, wealthy men from important families. They advised leaders, controlled money, and helped decide on wars and peace.
The United States Senate
The U.S. Senate is part of the United States Congress. Each of the 50 U.S. states sends two senators to Washington, D.C. This means there are 100 senators in total. Senators serve for six years. The Senate has unique powers, like approving treaties with other countries and confirming important government officials.
