North East & Circle Lines

Serangoon MRT station (NE12/CC13) is a busy underground train station in Serangoon, Singapore. It's a special interchange station, meaning you can switch between two different train lines here: the North East Line and the Circle Line. The station is located where Upper Serangoon Road and Serangoon Central meet. It's also directly connected to the Nex shopping mall and the Serangoon Bus Interchange, making it super convenient for travelers.

Station History

Exit C of Serangoon station.

Building Serangoon station and its tunnels started in July 1997. A group of companies worked together to build these important structures. The project cost about S$316.7 million.

Before the station officially opened, the Singapore Civil Defence Force held a special event. It was called a Shelter Open House. This happened on February 15-16, 2003. People could visit Serangoon station, along with Chinatown, Farrer Park, and Hougang stations. This event let everyone see how the stations could also serve as safe shelters.

Circle Line Opens

The part of the station for the Circle Line opened later, on May 28, 2009. The popular nex shopping mall was built right above this section of the station. The Serangoon Bus Interchange is also located directly above the Circle Line part of the station.

Station Sinking Incident

At one point, trains going towards Punggol had to slow down. This was because the North East Line platform had sunk about 1 centimeter. This happened when workers were digging for the Circle Line station. They found a lot of water underground during the digging. By early 2007, the digging was almost finished. Train speeds slowly returned to normal after that.

Art in Transit Programme

The station features cool artworks as part of the Art in Transit programme. On the North East Line side, you can see Memories of Childhood. This artwork was created by Eng Joo Heng.

On the Circle Line side, the artwork is called View of Life. It was made by Sarkasi Said. He used 18 original batik paintings, which are special artworks on cloth. These paintings were photographed and then printed onto large glass sheets for everyone to enjoy.
