Sergei Mikhailovich Makarov (Russian: Серге́й Миха́йлович Мака́ров; born 19 June 1958) is a famous Russian former professional ice hockey player. He played as a right wing. In the Soviet Union, Makarov played for CSKA Moscow for 11 seasons. He won the Soviet Player of the Year award three times.

Sergei Makarov was part of the legendary KLM Line with Igor Larionov and Vladimir Krutov. This line was known as one of the best in hockey history. Later, he joined the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Calgary Flames. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie player at age 31.

Makarov also had a very successful international career. He played for the Soviet national team. He won gold medals at eight World Championships. He also won gold at the 1981 Canada Cup. At the Winter Olympics, he won gold medals in 1984 and 1988. He also earned a silver medal in 1980.

Sergei Makarov was honored for his amazing career. He was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2016, he was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He was even chosen as one of six players for the International Ice Hockey Federation's (IIHF) IIHF Centennial All-Star Team. This team was picked by 56 hockey experts from 16 countries.

Sergei Makarov started his hockey training in the Russian SFSR. He quickly showed his talent. He won two World Junior Championships. In 1978, he was named the best player during his second victory.

He became a key player for the Soviet national ice hockey team. He helped them win many gold medals at the Ice Hockey World Championships. These wins happened in 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1989, and 1990. He also won the 1981 Canada Cup with the team. At the Winter Olympics, he won gold in 1984 and 1988, and silver in 1980.

In the Soviet Union, Makarov played for CSKA Moscow. He played there for 11 championship seasons. He won the Soviet Player of the Year award three times. He was also named to the Soviet League All-Star Team ten times. He led the league in points nine times and goals three times. His line with Igor Larionov and Vladimir Krutov, known as the KLM Line, was incredibly skilled.

Joining the NHL

In 1989, Makarov was allowed to leave the Soviet Union. He joined the National Hockey League (NHL) and played for the Calgary Flames. Even though he was 31 years old, he won the Calder Memorial Trophy. This award is given to the best rookie player in the NHL. Because of Makarov's win, the rules for the Calder Trophy were changed. Now, only players under 26 years old can qualify for the award. This change is sometimes called the Makarov Rule.

After playing for the Flames, Makarov also played for the San Jose Sharks from 1993 to 1995. He took a break from playing in the 1995–96 season. During that time, he became an assistant coach for the Russian national team. He helped them during the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

In the 1996–97 season, Makarov tried to make a comeback. He played four games for the Dallas Stars. Later, he played for HC Fribourg-Gottéron in Switzerland. He played there with his former teammates Vyacheslav Bykov and Andrei Khomutov.

Hall of Fame Honors

Sergei Makarov's incredible career was recognized with two major honors. In 2001, he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame. This happened during the Ice Hockey World Championship in Germany.

On June 27, 2016, it was announced that he would also be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He joined other hockey legends like Eric Lindros and Rogie Vachon. His induction took place on November 14, 2016. These honors show how important and skilled Sergei Makarov was in the world of ice hockey.
