Sergei Vadimovich Stepashin (born March 2, 1952) is a Russian politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Russia for a short time in 1999. Before that, he was a federal security minister. He resigned from that role in 1995. After being Prime Minister, he became the Chairman of the Accounts Chamber of Russia. He held this position from 2000 until 2013.

Early Life and Education
Sergei Stepashin was born in Port-Arthur, which was part of the USSR at the time. This area is now called Lüshunkou, China. He was born on March 2, 1952.
He attended several important schools. He graduated from the Higher Political School of the USSR Ministry of the Interior in 1973. In 1981, he finished the Lenin Military-Political Academy. Later, in 2002, he graduated from the Finance Academy. He has a high legal degree, known as a Doctor of Law. He is also a Professor and a State Advisor on Justice for the Russian Federation. His military rank is colonel general.
Political Career Highlights
Stepashin held several important government jobs. From February 1994 to June 1995, he was the Head of the FSK. This agency was a predecessor to the FSB.
After that, he became the Minister of Justice. He served in this role from 1997 to March 1998. Then, he became the Minister of Internal Affairs. He held that office from March 1998 to May 1999.
Prime Minister of Russia
In May 1999, Sergei Stepashin was appointed and approved by parliament as the Prime Minister of Russia. Boris Yeltsin, who was the President at the time, made it clear that Stepashin's time as Prime Minister would be temporary. He was replaced in August 1999 by Vladimir Putin, who later became president.
After Prime Minister
After his time as Prime Minister, Stepashin joined the political party Yabloko. He was elected to the State Duma in the 1999 Russian parliamentary elections. The State Duma is the lower house of the Russian parliament.
Later, he left his seat in parliament. He then became the head of the Account Chamber of the Russian Federation. This is a federal agency that checks how the government spends money. He worked in this important role until 2013.
Since 2007, Stepashin has been the head of the revived Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society. On March 27, 2024, Stepashin met with the Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia, Dang Minh Khoi.
