Sergey Lazarev's Journey

Early Life and Music Start (1983–1999)

Sergey Lazarev was born in Moscow, Russia, on April 1, 1983. He was the younger of two sons. When Sergey was five, his parents separated. His mother, Valentina, worked hard to raise him and his brother. His stepfather, Mikhail, and grandmother, Zhanna, also helped a lot.

From age four to nine, Sergey was very active in artistic gymnastics. He even won first place in some tournaments. However, he had to stop gymnastics because of an injury. He later said that gymnastics made his body flexible, which is still helpful today.

Sergey's journey into music began when he joined a children's song contest called Utrennyaya zvezda. Before he was 10, he sang in the Lokteus Children Choir and won several children's song contests. He then became a member of the children's music group Neposedy. This group was also where Yulia Volkova and Lena Katina from t.A.T.u. met. His friend Vlad Topalov, who would later join him in Smash!!, was also in Neposedy.

Rise to Fame with Smash!! (2000–2007)

In 2000, Sergey started studying acting at Moscow's MKhAT Theatre School, graduating in 2004. While studying, he played main roles in plays like Romeo and Juliet.

His music career really took off when he formed the pop duo Smash!! with Vlad Topalov in 2000. In early 2002, they filmed their first music video for "Should Have Loved You More." Sergey was very excited, saying that Universal Music Russia noticed them and offered a contract for three albums.

In February 2003, Smash!! released their first album, Freeway. Over a million copies were sold in Russia and other countries. They toured Russia throughout 2003. The next year, Freeway was released in many East Asian countries.

On December 1, 2004, Smash!! released their second album, 2Nite. However, the band broke up just one week later, as both Sergey and Vlad decided to start solo careers. Sergey later said that his time in Smash!! taught him a lot and helped him start his solo career from a strong position.
