Sergey Vyacheslavovich Lazarev (Russian: Серге́й Вячесла́вович Ла́зарев; born on April 1, 1983) is a famous Russian singer. He became well-known as a member of the pop group Smash!!. After the group broke up in 2006, Sergey started a successful solo career.
He represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden. He finished in third place, winning the public vote. He also represented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israel, with the song "Scream", and again finished third. Throughout his career, he has won many Russian and international music awards.
Early Life and Music Journey
Growing Up in Moscow
Sergey Lazarev was born in Moscow on April 1, 1983. He was the younger of two sons. His mother, Valentina, and stepfather, Mikhail, helped raise him. His grandmother, Zhanna, was also very involved in his upbringing.
From a young age, Sergey wanted to be a singer. Between the ages of four and nine, he practiced artistic gymnastics. He even won first place in some tournaments. He had to stop gymnastics because of an injury. Sergey later said that gymnastics helped him stay flexible.
First Steps in Music
Sergey's move from sports to music began when he joined a children's song contest called Utrennyaya zvezda. Before he was 10, he sang in the Lokteus Children Choir. He also performed at the Moscow Musical Theater. He won several children's song contests.
Eventually, he joined a children's music group called Neposedy. This was the same group where Yulia Volkova and Lena Katina from t.A.T.u. met. His friend Vlad Topalov also joined Neposedy. Vlad later became the other half of the group Smash!!.
Music Career Highlights
Forming Smash!!
In 2000, Sergey started studying acting at Moscow's MKhAT Theatre School. He graduated in 2004 as a professional actor. While studying, he played main roles in plays like Romeo and Juliet.
His music career really took off when he formed the pop duo Smash!! with Vlad Topalov in 2000. In early 2002, they filmed their first music video for "Should Have Loved You More". Sergey was very excited about it. He said that after this, they got a contract for three albums.
In August 2002, Smash!! won the New Wave contest. In October 2002, they released their first single, "Belle". The video for "Belle" was number one on MTV Russia's chart for six months.
Smash!! Albums and Breakup
In February 2003, Smash!! released their first album, Freeway. Over a million copies were sold in Russia and other countries. Smash!! then toured Russia throughout 2003.
The next year, Freeway was released in East Asian countries. The band also filmed a music video for their cover of George Michael's song "Faith" in Shanghai.
On December 1, 2004, Smash!! released their second album, 2Nite. The band broke up just one week after the album came out. Both Sergey and Vlad decided to start solo careers. Sergey later said that his time in Smash!! helped him a lot. He learned from working with top music professionals.
Solo Career Begins
After Smash!!, Sergey worked with British producer Brian Rawling. He recorded many songs for his first solo album, Don't Be Fake. This album was released in November 2005 and sold over 300,000 copies in Russia.
The first two songs from the album were "Eye of the Storm" and "Lost Without Your Love". Their music videos were filmed in Miami and South Africa. The third song, "Daje Esli Ty Uydiosh" (meaning "Just Because You Walk Away"), became the biggest hit from the album. It was number one for many weeks.
Because the song was so popular, the album was re-released with extra songs. Sergey also performed the song at the MTV Russia Awards. The fourth song, "Fake", also had a music video filmed in London.
After his first album's success, Sergey recorded a new album called TV Show. The music video for the main song, "Vspominay", was filmed in Moscow. The English version, "Everytime", was also released. In 2007, he won first place in the reality show Circus of the Stars. He also came second in the Russian version of Dancing on Ice.
New Albums and Awards
In 2008, Sergey tried to represent Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "The Flyer". He finished fourth in Russia's national selection. He was also nominated for Best Russian Act at the 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards. In 2008, Sergey won MTV's Artist of the Year Award.
In 2009, Sergey worked with artist Timati on the song "Lazerboy". On March 31, 2010, his third solo album, Electric Touch, was released. The album quickly became a bestseller in Russia and was certified gold.
In July 2011, Sergey released a song called "When You Tell Me That You Love Me" with Ani Lorak. He also collaborated with Timati and DJ M.E.G. on "Moscow to California". This song was part of his album Lazarev.., which came out in late 2012. This album also became a bestseller and earned him another Golden Disc award.
In 2013, he released the song "Stumblin'". He also had a concert at the Moscow Olympic Stadium in March 2013. Footage from this concert was released as a live album in December 2014. He won the Best Concert of the Year award at the Muz-TV Awards.
The Best and Eurovision
On April 1, 2015, Sergey released The Best (Russian Edition). This was a collection of his greatest hits to celebrate ten years of his solo career. He also released the music video for "Lucky Stranger". In October 2015, he released the English version of The Best with a new song, "Hard To Love".
On December 10, 2015, it was announced that Sergey would represent Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm. The song, "You Are the Only One", was released with its music video on March 5, 2016. He performed in the semi-final and made it to the grand final on May 14. In the final, he finished third. He won the public vote but came fifth with the national jury.

In December 2016, Sergey shared that he had a son named Nikita. Nikita later appeared in Sergey's music video for "Tak krasivo" in 2017.
After five years without a new album, Sergey released his fifth studio album, V Epitsentre, in December 2017.
On February 7, 2019, Sergey announced he would represent Russia again at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israel. His song was "Scream". He finished third in the final once more.
Personal Life
Sergey Lazarev has two children. He often shares moments with his son, Nikita, and daughter, Anna. He keeps his family life private but sometimes shares glimpses with his fans.
