Sewell (pronounced SOOL) is a small community in Gloucester County, New Jersey. It is located within both Mantua Township and Washington Township. In 2020, about 3,346 people lived there.
Sewell is named after William Joyce Sewell, who was a United States Senator. The community has its own ZIP Code, 08080. It is also home to Rowan College of South Jersey, a local college.
One interesting fact about Sewell is that it has the Inversand marl pit. This is the last working greensand mine in the world. This area is famous for finding fossils, much like places studied by early fossil hunters such as Edward Drinker Cope. Sewell also has the Barnsboro Inn, which is the oldest bar in New Jersey.
Fun Places to Visit in Sewell
Tall Pines State Preserve is a nature park that opened in November 2015. It covers 111 acres and is Gloucester County's first state park. You can find it near Deptford Township and Mantua Township.
This land was once a forest, then a farm for asparagus, and later a golf course. Many groups worked hard to protect this land. These groups included the South Jersey Land and Water Trust and the New Jersey Green Acres Program.
