Shahriar Nafees Ahmed (Bengali: শাহরিয়ার নাফীস আহমেদ) is a former Bangladeshi cricket player. He was born on May 1, 1985. He played in all three main types of cricket matches: Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I). He even led the Bangladesh T20I team as captain for a short time.

Shahriar Nafees started playing for the Bangladesh ODI team in 2005 against England. Later that same year, he played his first Test match. In 2008, he joined a different cricket league called the Indian Cricket League (ICL). Because of this, the Bangladesh Cricket Board temporarily stopped him from playing for Bangladesh. However, he later left the ICL and was able to play for his country again. He played for the Barisal Division in Bangladesh. In February 2021, Shahriar Nafees announced that he was retiring from playing all types of cricket.

About Shahriar Nafees

Shahriar Nafees was born on May 1, 1985, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is the oldest of three sons. His father was an army officer.

He went to St Joseph Higher Secondary School and then Notre Dame College. After that, he studied at the University of Dhaka. While at the university, he met Ishita Tasmin, and they later got married. They have a son and a daughter.

Playing for Bangladesh

Shahriar Nafees first played for the Bangladesh national team when they toured England in 2005. He scored his first century (100 runs or more) in a Test match in April 2006 against Australia. He also scored his first century in a One Day International (ODI) match against Zimbabwe in August 2006.

He was the first Bangladeshi player to score a century in the ICC Champions Trophy tournament. He held the record for the highest score by a Bangladeshi in that tournament for some time.

In October 2006, Nafees became the vice-captain for the Champions Trophy. This was to help him prepare to become a future captain. He did very well in that tournament, scoring another ODI century against Zimbabwe. He scored his third century against Zimbabwe in November of the same year. By the end of 2006, he had scored over 1,000 runs in ODIs, which was a first for a Bangladeshi player in one year.

After his time with the ICL, Nafees returned to the Bangladesh team in January 2010 for a series against India. He played in one Test match. He also played in an ODI series against New Zealand in October 2010, where he scored well.

Nafees was part of Bangladesh's team for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. He played in two matches during the tournament. After the World Cup, he played against Australia and scored two half-centuries (50 runs or more), which helped him keep his spot in the team. He also played a Test match against Zimbabwe in August 2011, scoring 50 runs in one innings.

In October 2011, he scored 82 runs in a Test match against the West Indies. Later, he scored 97 runs against Pakistan in a Test series. This partnership of 180 runs was a big achievement for Bangladesh. It was their highest partnership for the fifth wicket in Test matches.

Becoming a Captain

Shahriar Nafees was the very first captain for Bangladesh in Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket. He was also the youngest T20I captain for Bangladesh, taking on the role when he was 21 years and 211 days old.

Playing in Bangladesh

In June 2008, Nafees joined the Indian Cricket League (ICL). This league was not approved by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Because of this, the BCB gave him a ten-year ban from playing. However, he left the ICL in September 2009, and the ban was lifted, allowing him to play for Bangladesh again.

In 2012, the Bangladesh Cricket Board started a new Twenty20 tournament called the Bangladesh Premier League. Shahriar Nafees was chosen as an 'icon player' for the Barisal Burners team.

In the 2013 Bangladesh Premier League, he joined the Khulna Royal Bengals team and became their captain. He scored the first century by a Bangladeshi player in the history of the Bangladesh Premier League.

He was the top run-scorer for Agrani Bank Cricket Club in the 2017–18 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, scoring 550 runs in 13 matches.

Retirement and New Roles

On February 13, 2021, Shahriar Nafees announced that he was retiring from all forms of cricket. Another player, Abdur Razzak, also retired on the same day.
