The Shanay-timpishka is an amazing river in the Amazon Rainforest of Peru. It is often called the "Boiling River of the Amazon" because parts of it are incredibly hot! This river is a tributary, which means it flows into a larger river, the Pachitea River. The Pachitea then joins the Ucayali River, which is a main source of the mighty Amazon River.

The Shanay-timpishka is one of the biggest hot rivers ever found. The whole river system is about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) long. But only the lower 6.3 kilometers (3.9 miles) of it are hot. At its deepest, the river is about 4.5 meters (15 feet) deep. It can be as wide as 30 meters (98 feet) in some places.

At the start of the river, the water is a normal jungle temperature, around 27°C (81°F). But as it flows, hot water from deep inside the Earth rises up. This happens through cracks in the ground called geologic fault-zones. These hot waters make the river's temperature rise a lot! The hottest temperature ever measured in a hot spring in the river was 99.1°C (210.4°F). The average river temperature recorded was almost 95°C (203°F). That's almost boiling!

What's in a Name?

The name "Shanay-timpishka" comes from local words. It means 'boiled by the heat of the sun'. "Shanay" means "heat of the sun" and "timpu" means "to boil." However, scientists know the heat actually comes from deep inside the Earth. This type of heat is called geothermal energy.

Most people simply call this amazing place the "Boiling River." In Spanish, it is known as "Río Hirviente." There is also a very hot spring within the river that locals call "La Bomba," which means "The Pump."

Where is This Amazing River?

You can find the Shanay-timpishka River in Peru. It is located in the State of Huánuco, in the Province of Puerto Inca. Specifically, it is in the District of Honoria. This area is part of the low Amazon jungle, known as "omagua." The river is within the Pachitea River's watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into one main river.

Three communities live along the Boiling River. These are Mayantuyacu, Santuario Huishtín, and the Shanay-timpishka Center.

Ancient Stories and Spirits

Local spiritual leaders, called shamans, have a special belief about the river. They say the boiling water is created by Yacumama. Yacumama is a giant serpent spirit. She is known as the "Mother of the Waters." These stories help explain the river's mystery in their culture.

How Does the River Get So Hot?

A scientist named Andrés Ruzo has studied the river's heat. He first heard about this boiling river from his grandfather when he was a child. It's very unusual because the river stays hot even though there are no active volcanoes nearby. Volcanoes or other hot vents usually provide this kind of heat.

Despite its unique nature, National Geographic has said it is a completely natural wonder. It's a geothermal feature that isn't volcanic. It flows with unusually high temperatures.

The Earth's Inner Heat

The main idea for why the river is so hot comes from the geothermal gradient of the Earth. This means that the deeper you go into the Earth, the hotter it gets. This is because you are getting closer to the Earth's mantle, which is a very hot layer.

Here's how scientists think it works:

  • Rainwater falls onto the Amazon Rainforest.
  • This water then seeps deep into the Earth through cracks in the rock. These cracks are called faults.
  • As the water travels deeper, it gets heated by the Earth's natural warmth.
  • Finally, this superheated water rises back to the surface through hot springs. These springs then heat up the river along its path.

Protecting This Unique Place

The area around the Boiling River is facing some challenges. One big problem is deforestation. This means that forests are being cut down. When trees are removed, it can harm the environment and the animals that live there.

According to National Geographic, much of this deforestation happens when local people cut down trees. They use the wood or clear land. There is one part of the jungle that remains untouched. This area is protected by a company called Maple Energy. This company follows environmental rules to avoid fines. Protecting this special river and its surrounding jungle is very important.
