Shane McConkey's Skiing Journey
Shane McConkey won many awards and competitions during his career. He first started as a competitive ski racer. But he soon moved on to star in many thrilling extreme skiing movies.
Shane was famous for combining BASE jumping with skiing. This meant he would ski off huge cliffs and then open a parachute. One amazing feat was skiing into a BASE jump off the Eiger mountain. Shane also went to Burke Mountain Academy, a special school for skiers.
He was also known for helping to design new kinds of skis. He is often called the "father" of skis with "reverse sidecut" and "reverse camber." These skis are also known as "rocker" skis. He first put ski bindings on water skis to use them in Alaska. Later, he helped create the Volant Spatula and the K2 Pontoon ski designs. These designs made it easier to ski in deep snow.
A high-speed chairlift and ski area at Park City Mountain Resort are named after his father, Jim McConkey. Jim was also a very early supporter of extreme skiing in the U.S.
On April 2, 2011, Shane McConkey was honored. He was added to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. Other famous skiers from the Tahoe area, Daron Rahlves and Glen Plake, were also inducted.
How Shane McConkey Passed Away
On March 26, 2009, Shane McConkey sadly passed away. This happened during a ski-BASE jump in the Dolomite Mountains, Italy. He was jumping from a mountain called Sass Pordoi. During the jump, one of his skis did not come off correctly. This made him spin around. After he fixed the problem, it was too late to open his parachute safely.
