Shawn Dwayne Marion (born May 7, 1978) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played for 16 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Shawn was known as "The Matrix" because he was very athletic. He could play and defend many different positions on the court. He also had a unique way of shooting the ball.
Shawn Marion was a four-time NBA All-Star. He was also chosen twice for the All-NBA Team. In 2011, he helped the Dallas Mavericks win their first-ever NBA championship.
Early Life and High School Basketball
Shawn Marion was born in Waukegan, Illinois. This city is about an hour north of Chicago. He grew up playing basketball in Clarksville, Tennessee. He went to Clarksville High School.
While in high school, Shawn was a teammate with Trenton Hassell. Trenton also became an NBA player later on. Shawn played basketball for three years in high school. He earned many awards, including All-Region and District honors. He was even nominated as a McDonald's All-American.
In his final year of high school, Shawn was amazing. He scored about 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds per game. He led his team to the final eight teams in the Tennessee Class AAA State Tournament. He was named the MVP of the tournament. He was also chosen for the first-team Tennessee All-State Team. People remember him as one of the best high school basketball players in Tennessee history.
College Basketball Journey
After high school, Shawn Marion went to Vincennes University. This is a junior college in Indiana. He played there for two years. He was named a first-team All-American in his second year. In his first year, he was a second-team All-American.
During his time at Vincennes, Shawn scored a lot of points. He averaged over 23 points and 12 rebounds per game. He became the second-highest scorer in the school's history. In 1998, he was named the NJCAA David Rowlands Male Student Athlete of the Year.
In May 1998, Shawn decided to play for UNLV. He played one year there as a junior. He averaged 18.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and 1.9 blocks per game. He was recognized for his great play. He made the Western Athletic Conference Mountain Division First Team. He also made the All-Newcomer Team and All-Defensive Team.
Shawn initially planned to stay at UNLV for his senior year. He wanted to graduate and try to win an NCAA championship. However, NBA scouts were very interested in him. He learned he would likely be picked early in the 1999 NBA draft. So, in April 1999, he decided to enter the NBA draft.
Professional NBA Career
Phoenix Suns (1999–2008)
The Phoenix Suns picked Shawn Marion as the ninth player in the 1999 NBA draft. In his first season, he missed 31 games due to a knee injury. Even so, he was chosen for the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. He averaged 10.2 points and 6.5 rebounds in his rookie year.
Shawn's performance improved a lot in his second season. He averaged 17.3 points and 10.7 rebounds. He played in the Rookie Challenge during the NBA All-Star Weekend. He kept getting better, averaging 19.1 points in 2001–02 and 21.2 points in 2002–03. In 2003, he became an NBA All-Star for the first time.
In the 2003–04 season, Shawn led the NBA in total steals. He was one of only two players to rank high in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks. After this season, he played for the U.S. national team in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
In 2004–05, Shawn started almost every game for the Suns. He averaged 19.4 points and 11.3 rebounds. He was named Western Conference Player of the Week twice. He was also chosen as an All-Star reserve. He made the All-NBA Third Team. He was the only player that season to rank in the top 25 for scoring, rebounding, steals, blocks, and minutes played. He also helped the Phoenix team win the Shooting Stars Competition.
The 2005–06 season was another great one for Shawn. He averaged 21.8 points and 11.8 rebounds. He was named Western Conference Player of the Month in February. He was also an All-Star reserve again. For the second year in a row, he made the All-NBA Third Team. He was the first player in NBA history to rank in the top five for both rebounding and steals in back-to-back years. On February 22, 2006, he scored a career-high 44 points against the Boston Celtics. He also had a career-high 24 rebounds in a game against the Charlotte Bobcats.
In 2006–07, Shawn led the NBA in total steals. He also received votes for Defensive Player of the Year. He scored his 10,000th career point on October 31, 2006. He was an All-Star again that season.
In September 2007, there were rumors that Shawn wanted to leave Phoenix. He said he would like to play for the Los Angeles Lakers with his friend Kobe Bryant. On November 9, 2007, he tied his career high with 24 rebounds in a game against the Miami Heat.
Miami Heat (2008–2009)
On February 6, 2008, Shawn Marion was traded to the Miami Heat. He went there with Marcus Banks. In return, the Suns received Shaquille O'Neal. On March 8, 2008, Shawn played in a unique replayed NBA game. The Heat played the Atlanta Hawks to finish a game from December 2007. Shawn had played for the Suns in the original game. This meant he officially played for two different teams on the same day.
Toronto Raptors (2009)
On February 13, 2009, Shawn and Marcus Banks were traded again. They went to the Toronto Raptors. In exchange, the Heat received Jermaine O'Neal and Jamario Moon. On April 16, Shawn scored a season-high 34 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. This was during a win over the Bulls in the last game of the season.
Dallas Mavericks (2009–2014)
On July 9, 2009, Shawn Marion joined the Dallas Mavericks. He signed a five-year contract with the team. In his first season with the Mavericks, he was a consistent player. However, his scoring and rebounding averages were lower than his previous years.
For the 2010–11 season, Shawn started playing off the bench. Caron Butler took over his starting spot. But Butler got injured, and Shawn became a starter again. Shawn was the starting small forward during the Mavericks' playoff run. This run led them to the NBA Finals. In Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals, he scored 26 points.
In the NBA Finals, Shawn helped the Mavericks beat the Miami Heat in six games. This win gave the Mavericks their first-ever NBA championship. Shawn averaged 13.7 points and 6.3 rebounds in the Finals. His best game was Game 2, where he scored 20 points. During this season, Shawn joined a special group of players. He became one of only a few players with 1,500 steals and 1,000 blocks in their career.
In the 2011–12 season, Shawn was the only player 6 feet 7 inches or shorter to lead his team in rebounding. On March 13, 2012, he moved into the top 100 on the NBA's all-time scoring list.
On December 18, 2012, Shawn reached 16,000 career points. He joined a very exclusive club of players. These players had at least 16,000 points, 9,000 rebounds, 1,500 steals, and 1,000 blocks. On January 27, 2013, he played in his 1,000th NBA game. This made him the 107th player in NBA history to reach this milestone. On March 6, 2013, he passed Rod Strickland on the NBA's all-time steals list.
On January 3, 2014, Shawn passed the 17,000-point mark. He continued to be part of that special group of players with high numbers in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks.
Cleveland Cavaliers (2014–2015)
On September 9, 2014, Shawn Marion signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers. In December 2014, he made history again. He became the first player in the NBA to have 15,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 1,000 blocks, and 500 three-pointers. On January 21, 2015, Shawn announced he would retire after the 2014–15 season.
Shawn missed some games in February and March due to a hip injury. He returned to the NBA Finals in June 2015. However, he did not play in any of the Cavaliers' six games. Cleveland lost the series to the Golden State Warriors.
On June 18, 2015, Shawn Marion officially retired from the NBA. He played for 16 seasons.
National Team Experience
Shawn Marion also played for the United States national team. He played in the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, where he won a gold medal. He also played in the 2002 FIBA World Championship in Indianapolis. In the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, he won a bronze medal.
Personal Life
Shawn Marion has a son. In 2017, Shawn teamed up with another retired NBA player, Cedric Ceballos. They competed together on Season 30 of The Amazing Race.
In February 2018, Shawn Marion and former NBA player Matt Walsh became major owners of the New Zealand Breakers. This is a basketball team in New Zealand.
Shawn currently lives in Dallas.
