Shawneetown is a city in Gallatin County, Illinois, United States. In 2020, about 1,054 people lived there. It is the main city, or county seat, of Gallatin County.

Location and Surroundings
Shawneetown is in the southeastern part of Gallatin County. It is located at 37°42′53″N 88°11′00″W / 37.714701°N 88.183465°W. Illinois Route 13 runs through the city. This road goes southeast about 3 miles to the Ohio River and the border with Kentucky. There, you'll find Old Shawneetown. If you go west on Route 13, it's about 20 miles to Harrisburg. Shawneetown is also on the northeast edge of the Shawnee National Forest.
A Brief History of Shawneetown
The current city of Shawneetown was built in 1937. This happened after a huge flood from the Ohio River covered the original town. That old town is now known as Old Shawneetown.
