The Shebandowan Lakes are a group of three connected lakes in Ontario, Canada. They are called Upper Shebandowan Lake, Middle Shebandowan Lake, and Lower Shebandowan Lake. These lakes are found in the Thunder Bay District in northwestern Ontario. They are an important part of the Great Lakes Basin. The Shebandowan River starts from the Lower Shebandowan Lake.

Where the Water Comes From

The Shebandowan Lakes get their water from several places. The main rivers that flow into the lakes are Greenwater Creek, the Kashabowie River, and the Swamp River.

How Water Leaves the Lakes

The main way water leaves the lakes is through the Shebandowan River. This river starts from the eastern part of Lower Shebandowan Lake. It flows over a small dam, called a weir, near the community of Shebandowan. From there, the water travels through the Matawin River and the Kaministiquia River before finally reaching Lake Superior.

Getting Around the Lakes

Several important routes pass by the Shebandowan Lakes.

Roads and Railways

Ontario Highway 11 runs along the northern side of the lakes. This highway is also part of the Trans-Canada Highway, which crosses all of Canada. Another road, Ontario Highway 586, branches off Highway 11. It crosses a narrow strip of land between Middle Shebandowan Lake and Lower Shebandowan Lake.

The Canadian National Railway also has a main train line that follows the northern shore of the lakes. This railway was originally built as part of the Canadian Northern Railway's transcontinental line, connecting Canada from coast to coast.

Water Travel

For those who travel by air, the Kashabowie/Upper Shebandowan Lake Water Aerodrome is located on Upper Shebandowan Lake. This is a special airport for planes that can land and take off from water.
