Where Did Shelland Get Its Name?
The name "Shelland" is quite special because it's the only place with this name in the UK! It comes from the words "Shelf land." This is because the village sits on a kind of "shelf" or raised area of land. From this spot, you can look down over the nearby village of Buxhall.
The Unique Church of Shelland
The village has an old church called the Church of King Charles the Martyr. It was first built a very long time ago, in the Middle Ages. Most of it was rebuilt in 1767. This church is considered a very important historical building.
What makes this church extra special? It's the only church in the whole UK that regularly uses a barrel organ for its music! A barrel organ is a musical instrument that plays tunes when a cylinder with pins on it turns.
Also, this church is one of only five churches in the UK dedicated to "King Charles the Martyr." This refers to King Charles I, who was executed in 1649.
