Rattlesden is a small village located in the Mid Suffolk area of Suffolk, a county in eastern England. It's about 24 kilometers (15 miles) northwest of Ipswich, which is the main town in Suffolk. The closest town to Rattlesden is Stowmarket, located about 6 kilometers (4 miles) to the east. The wider area around Rattlesden includes two smaller settlements called Hightown Green and Poystreet Green.

In 2005, around 900 people lived in Rattlesden. By the time of the 2011 official count, the population figures for Rattlesden also included the nearby area of Shelland.

The local church, St Nicholas, belongs to the Church of England. It was first built in the 13th century, and parts of it have been changed and added to over many years.

Village History

Rattlesden and the areas around it, like much of eastern England, were important places for people with strong Puritan beliefs during the 1500s and 1600s.

Famous People from Rattlesden

In 1634, a local wheelwright named Richard Kimball led a group of people from Rattlesden to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in America. This was part of a large movement of people called the Great Migration.

Thomas Cobbold (1680–1752), who started the famous Cobbold family brewing business and the Cliff Brewery, was born in Rattlesden. Also, John Pretyman (1753/1754–1817), an Anglican priest who was an important church leader (called an Archdeacon) in Lincoln, used to work as a curate in the Rattlesden church.

Rattlesden During World War II

During the Second World War, Rattlesden was home to a large base for American heavy bomber planes, known as RAF Rattlesden. Today, this site is used by the Rattlesden Gliding Club, where people fly gliders.

Protecting Rattlesden's Past

In 1975, the oldest part of the village was made a "conservation area." This means it's a special place where buildings and the environment are protected to keep their historic look and feel. This was done by the local council with help from English Heritage, an organization that looks after England's historic places.
